An attempt to smuggle duty-unpaid cigarettes into Singapore by car was thwarted after officers from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) sliced open the vehicle’s tyres during checks.<\/p>\n
The discovery was made at Woodlands Checkpoint on Sept 26, said ICA in a Facebook post on Tuesday (Oct 13).<\/p>\n
ICA’s search and examination officers directed the Malaysia-registered car for enhanced checks and discovered over 980 packets of contraband hidden within tyres.<\/p>\n
The Malaysian driver, 31, was arrested. The suspect and the seized exhibits have been referred to Singapore Customs for further investigation.<\/p>\n
It is an offence to buy, sell, convey, possess or deal with duty-unpaid goods under the Customs Act and the Goods and Services Tax Act.<\/p>\n
Offenders face a fine of up to 40 times the amount of duty and GST evaded, jail time of up to six years, or both.<\/p>\n
Vehicles used to commit such offences, as well as proceeds from the sale of duty-unpaid goods, may be forfeited.<\/p>\n
