When Darius Foh, 23, saw a photo of himself on Facebook, he was shocked because he thought someone had complained about him.<\/p>\n
The picture, which shows the enrolled nurse<\/a> in scrubs, feeding an elderly patient at Singapore General Hospital (SGH), was posted in the Complaint Singapore group on Sept 2.<\/p>\n Despite where it was posted, the Facebook post<\/a> was actually commending Darius.<\/p>\n It read: \u201cI saw a very hardworking male nurse. During his shift, an elderly patient wouldn\u2019t eat or drink. Every day, he patiently spent a whole hour carefully feeding her porridge, spoonful by spoonful, afraid of scalding her. If she wouldn\u2019t take her medicine, he would mix it into the porridge. After she finished eating, he would wipe her mouth. Kudos to him.\u201d<\/p>\n Darius was commended for his patience and tenderness towards an elderly patient.<\/p>\n PHOTO: GIFTEDCRANBERRY4724\/FACEBOOK<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n Darius told Stomp that he assisted in feeding the elderly woman, as she was weak and could not eat on her own. He did not realise he had been photographed until colleagues forwarded him the Facebook post.<\/p>\n \u201cHonestly, I was quite shocked because I thought I kena complained,\u201d he said in an interview on Oct 1. \u201cBut after reading the post, I realised it was actually a good thing and felt happy to have my efforts recognised.\u201d<\/p>\n When presented with a Stomp Goody Bag<\/a>, Darius described the media recognition as \u201csurreal\u201d and a surprise.<\/p>\n \u201cI would have never expected to be interviewed over this,\u201d he said. \u201cTo me, I was just doing my basic day-to-day work as a nurse and I didn\u2019t feel I did anything special.\u201d<\/p>\n Darius was presented with a Stomp Goody Bag on Oct 1.<\/p>\n STOMP PHOTO: CHERLYNN NG<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n Darius, who has been at SGH for over a year, said nursing<\/a> has always been his calling.<\/p>\n He studied nursing at the Institute of Technical Education and was a medic during his National Service days.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen I was young, I saw my dad taking care of my grandma, and it really inspired me to pursue nursing,\u201d he shared.<\/p>\n \u201cI love to take care of people. I find it very rewarding when my patients get better, and I see them recover and be happier.\u201d<\/p>\n Nursing has always been Darius\u2019 calling.<\/p>\n STOMP PHOTO: CHERLYNN NG<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n Darius acknowledged that being hospitalised might be a \u201cvery gloomy thing\u201d, but hopes that his care will make a patient\u2019s stay better.<\/p>\n \u201cI feel like a common misconception is that nursing is a very female-dominated industry,\u201d he said. \u201cBut there are a lot of male nurses like me as well, who are willing to take care of the elderly and everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n The Facebook post, which has garnered over 1,800 likes, saw netizens chiming in with their own equally positive experiences with male nurses and at SGH.<\/p>\n Darius encourages his peers in the industry to keep chasing their dreams.<\/p>\n STOMP PHOTO: CHERLYNN NG<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n Several also praised Darius, with one user commenting: \u201cThe photo speaks volumes about this nurse\u2019s compassion towards his patient. Well done!\u201d<\/p>\n Another wrote: \u201cI was warded two months in SGH and I know how hard the staff work. You\u2019re right (that) they are angels.\u201d<\/p>\n Darius encourages his peers in healthcare to keep up the good work<\/a>, adding: \u201cJust chase your dreams.
