At Singapore General Hospital (SGH), Dr Chew Si Yuan, a consultant at the department of respiratory and critical care medicine, said influenza is currently the predominant cause of respiratory infection seen among patients.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe experience flu cases all year round in Singapore \u2026 but certainly in the last one month, we have been seeing more cases than normal. Anecdotally, we have easily seen double or triple the number of cases that we normally would see,\u201d he said. \u00a0<\/p>\n Dr Chew added that measures have been put in place to cope with the increase in cases.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cAll hospitals, including SGH, have surge preparedness plans in place. We are currently managing these cases with dynamic surge staff deployment,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n During periods of haze, SGH uses air purifiers and closes the windows and doors of non-air-conditioned wards. It also steps up monitoring of higher-risk patients and offers home medication delivery to reduce unnecessary trips to the hospital.\u00a0<\/p>\n Doctors say poorer air quality can aggravate respiratory conditions, particularly among older people, young children, pregnant women and those with underlying lung or heart conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n However, there is currently no strong evidence that haze makes influenza itself more severe, according to the CDA.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cIf you have more cases, then of course there may be more severe cases overall.
