{"id":91935,"date":"2026-10-11T02:07:16","date_gmt":"2026-10-10T18:07:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=91935"},"modified":"2026-10-11T02:07:16","modified_gmt":"2026-10-10T18:07:16","slug":"new-third-space-opens-for-young-people-in-yishun-to-form-friendships-and-connections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=91935","title":{"rendered":"New third space opens for young people in Yishun to form friendships and connections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text-primary article-summary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 <!-- -->Young people in northern Singapore have a new neighbourhood hangout where they can make friends and join activities with their peers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Chop Community, a space for those aged between 15 and 35, was officially opened on Oct 10 at the void deck of Block 287 Yishun Avenue 6.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The free-to-use space, which can accommodate up to 70 young people at a time, is among the 12 new \u201cthird spaces\u201d introduced under<a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/job-tasters-adulting-101-and-500-curiosity-credits-part-of-new-five-year-plan-for-spore-youth?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\"> the SG Youth Plan earlier in 2026.<\/span><\/a> Third spaces are places where young people can hang out, pursue their hobbies and interests, and take part in activities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Known as Chop, the space has been in operation since January, hosting activities such as trivia nights, karaoke sessions, board games and art jamming sessions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It is run by social enterprise Crater Impact, an organisation that aims to promote civic-mindedness and future readiness among youth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Chop is open every Tuesday and Thursday from 3pm to 6pm, Wednesday from 6pm to 9pm and Friday from 6pm to 10pm. Opening hours on Saturday vary depending on programme schedules. Shanmugam and Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Culture, Community and Youth and Sustainability and the Environment Goh Hanyan, both of whom are MPs for Nee Soon GRC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Fam said Chop was set up amid growing concerns around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/community\/friendship-recession-among-youth-more-social-infrastructure-needed-to-build-connections?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">youth social isolation in Singapore.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He said young people value opportunities to build and sustain connections with others through recurring or regular activities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe believe this sense of consistency is important because building meaningful relationships takes time, and having a familiar space where people can keep showing up makes it easier for these connections to grow,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Young people also want to contribute and have their ideas taken seriously. They have a say in shaping Chop. The welcoming community keeps her coming back to the space, which she has visited nearly 10 times since June.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Chong Pang resident said she first visited the space with her partner, and has since forged new friendships with other young people there through sessions such as board game nights<!-- -->, art jamming sessions and trivia nights<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Third spaces like these offer a place to hang out, similar to spending time at a friend\u2019s house, and give young people an avenue to find their sense of belonging, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Speaking to the media on Oct 10, Goh said young people are looking for informal spaces to form connections.
