She remains active in her studio, with her commitment to international projects undiminished. In recent months, she has visited Hong Kong twice to prepare for “What Remains to be Seen”, her first solo exhibition at a gallery in two years.

The only pause in her working routine came during the 2020 pandemic lockdowns. Travel restrictions did little to stem her creative output, however. Being confined to Jeju Island sparked a new realisation six decades into her illustrious career – the shift is reflected in about 20 works, produced between 2020 and 2026, on show at the Villepin art gallery in Hong Kong’s Central until November 15.

“The pandemic marked the beginning of a pivot where I began to perceive time along a horizontal plane rather than from a fixed, single-point linear perspective,” Kang says. She is referring to the eye-level horizontal line that divides a composition, rather than the conventional vanishing point used to create an illusion of three-dimensional depth on a flat surface.

Kang is known for abstract interpretations of natural landscapes, shaped by her deep appreciation of classical Chinese poetry and ink painting. Her inspirations include the poet Wang Wei and artists Zhao Mengfu and Wen Tong. A seasoned traveller, Kang has made multiple trips to the National Palace Museum in Taipei to study classical ink masterpieces first-hand.

At nearly 80, South Korean artist Kang Myonghi retains the creative energy of her youth.
