A woman was taken to hospital after reportedly falling from an HDB block in Sengkang on Thursday (Oct 8).<\/p>\n

A Facebook (FB) post uploaded by the Complaint Singapore account on Friday (Oct 9) shows a woman lying motionless on the ground as Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) personnel attend to her.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She is also seen lying on a wheeled stretcher surrounded by four SCDF personnel.<\/p>\n

The post’s caption claimed that a domestic helper had fallen while cleaning windows, and cautioned against doing so with the window grille open.<\/p>\n

In response to queries from AsiaOne, the SCDF said it received a call for assistance at Block 121A Rivervale Drive at about 10.30am on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The woman was subsequently taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital by SCDF.<\/p>\n

MOM investigating matter<\/h2>\n

In response to AsiaOne’s queries, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) confirmed that the incident took place while the domestic helper was carrying out window cleaning, adding that it is now investigating the matter.<\/p>\n

It reminded all employers of their responsibility to ensure the safety of their helpers.<\/p>\n

“Employers must guide their migrant domestic workers to follow safe practices when performing tasks such as window cleaning. This includes checking that window grilles are properly installed and locked throughout the cleaning process.”<\/p>\n

It added that all first-time employers and first-time migrant domestic workers are also educated on essential safety measures during the Employer’s Orientation Programme and Settling-In Programme respectively.<\/p>\n

“These programmes cover essential safety practices, including window cleaning,” MOM said.<\/p>\n

Netizens stress helpers’ safety<\/h2>\n

Facebook users commenting on the post urged domestic workers not to risk their lives cleaning such windows and called on employers to prioritise their safety.<\/p>\n

One user wrote: “Dear Helpers: Don’t! Just don’t clean the windows of your employer’s house[,] who cares if they … [are] mad at you?”<\/p>\n

The commenter added that domestic helpers should know their rights and not risk their lives for their jobs, noting that their families back home care about them.<\/p>\n

Under the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act, employers must provide a safe working environment for their helpers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Employers who fail to meet the requirements can be fined up to $10,000 and\/or jailed for up to 12 months. They may also be barred from employing a migrant domestic worker.<\/p>\n
