{"id":91791,"date":"2026-10-10T12:27:01","date_gmt":"2026-10-10T04:27:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=91791"},"modified":"2026-10-10T12:27:01","modified_gmt":"2026-10-10T04:27:01","slug":"imh-to-be-redeveloped-and-expanded-renamed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=91791","title":{"rendered":"IMH to be redeveloped and expanded, renamed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text-primary article-summary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013<!-- --> Singapore\u2019s sole psychiatric hospital, the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), will be renamed the National Centre for Mental Health Singapore<!-- --> <!-- -->in 2027, reflecting a broader shift in how the country approaches psychiatric care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Highlighting a steady rise in mental health challenges in Singapore, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung outlined an overhaul of psychiatric care, which includes rebranding and expanding the Institute of Mental Health and revising parental consent rules to ensure young people are not deterred from seeking help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cLike our other national specialty centres for cancer, heart or eye, it will lead research, coordinate psychiatric care across hospitals and build sector-wide capabilities,\u201d he said, speaking on Oct 10, which is World Mental Health Day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The name change, which comes as long-term care is increasingly shifted to community facilities, will mark a major move away from IMH operating as a long-stay asylum or \u201cforever home\u201d for many psychiatric patients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">As part of a broader strategy to handle rising mental health cases across the country, the Government will redevelop and expand IMH at its present site in Buangkok, turning it into a bigger and more modern hospital by 2040, Ong said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Furthermore, three regional hospitals \u2013 Changi General Hospital, Woodlands Hospital and Alexandra Hospital \u2013 are strengthening their psychiatric capabilities to complement the central hub.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Beyond expanding facilities, the long-term answer to the mounting mental health challenge is prevention and early intervention, Ong stressed.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"font-primary-headline-md-semibold\" data-testid=\"article-subhead-test-id\">Lowering barriers to youth mental healthcare<\/h2>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Meanwhile, the Government will seek public views on parental consent requirements for various service providers in the coming weeks, he said in his message.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Ministry of Health is developing guidelines on parental consent, while the Singapore Medical Council is revising its ethical guidelines to provide doctors with clearer guidance on parental consent so that they can proceed with treatment that is in the best interests of the patient, Ong said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cMental health challenges are rising around the world, especially among young people. Hospitals and specialist clinics are seeing more patients, including many who are still in school,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/health\/new-initiative-to-help-young-people-with-poor-mental-health-when-red-flags-appear?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">More young people are also being attended to in the community,<\/span><\/a> he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mental health advocates here have pushed for the lowering of the age of\u00a0consent\u00a0for mental health services. This is to help\u00a0young people\u00a0who might otherwise face\u00a0parental\u00a0resistance to\u00a0mental\u00a0health\u00a0treatment due to stigma or worry about burdening their parents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Currently, callers to the National Mindline on 1771 can stay anonymous, while community-based providers generally do not insist on parental consent before offering counselling and support. However, schools are more likely to require it before formal counselling begins, given their philosophy of strong partnership with families, Ong said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He stressed that an across-the-board requirement for parental consent should not become a barrier to seeking help because, sometimes, young people are simply not ready to speak to their parents yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThe right system is one that lets a young person enter through a safe door, and then involve the family appropriately as the care journey progresses,\u201d Ong said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cAt every stage, we must act in the young person\u2019s best interests and safeguard his or her well-being.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ong also pointed to stigma as the key barrier to seeking help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cOften, they are afraid. They fear being judged by family members, friends, teachers or employers. They worry that seeking mental health support will leave a permanent record that will later disadvantage them in future education opportunities, scholarship or job applications, or when buying insurance,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Government agencies must work together to eliminate these fears.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cSeeking mental health support should not, by itself, become a mark against a person,\u201d said Ong. \u201cWhere disclosure is genuinely necessary, it should be limited to relevant circumstances and handled fairly.
