A human skull was carried into a Czech town in late September as part of the country’s observance of St Wenceslas Day, officially the day of Czech statehood. The public holiday honours Wenceslas, the 10th century ruler later venerated as the patron saint of the Czech lands and the “Good King Wenceslas” of the familiar Christmas carol.

Wenceslas (Václav in Czech) was born around 907 and became ruler of Bohemia as a teenager. Raised as a Christian, he promoted Christianity – then relatively new to the region – and helped consolidate the early Bohemian state. His political orientation towards the Christian rulers of the German realm was not universally welcomed at home.

In the autumn of 929 (some sources place his death in 935), he was murdered at Stara Boleslav, about 24km (15 miles) from central Prague, apparently at the behest of his younger brother Boleslav, who succeeded him.

Wenceslas’ death transformed him into a martyr. His cult developed rapidly, and over the centuries the assassinated monarch became enveloped by legend. Wenceslas came to be seen not simply as a saint but as a protector of the Czech lands and a potent symbol of political legitimacy and statehood.
