SINGAPORE \u2013\u00a0Lawyer and opposition politician Lim Tean was handed three additional charges on Oct 9.<\/p>\n
The 61-year-old allegedly failed to present a valid passport to an immigration officer when leaving Singapore via Tuas Checkpoint on Aug 4.<\/p>\n
He is also accused of committing an act that could defeat the course of justice by allegedly leaving Singapore for Malaysia unlawfully that day.<\/p>\n
Lim purportedly did so to avoid serving his jail sentence, which the Court of Appeal had ordered him to begin on Aug 3.<\/p>\n
For his third charge, he allegedly failed to comply with the duty imposed on him to surrender to custody at the State Courts that day to start serving his sentence.<\/p>\n
Lim was expected to begin\u00a0his jail term for practising law without a valid certificate on Aug 3<\/span><\/a>. An arrest warrant was issued against him that same day after he failed to show up.<\/p>\n The founder of opposition party Peoples Voice was arrested\u00a0three days later in Johor Bahru by the Royal Malaysia Police, and subsequently deported to Singapore on Aug 11.<\/p>\n The Singapore Police Force said the Commercial Affairs Department arrested Lim upon his return<\/span><\/a> from Malaysia that day.<\/p>\n He had been convicted of three charges under the Legal Profession Act in July 2024, and\u00a0sentenced to six weeks\u2019 jail and a fine of $1,000<\/span><\/a>\u00a0by a district judge in February 2025.<\/p>\n Lim\u00a0had attended court hearings and submitted documents on 32 occasions between April and June 2021 without a valid practising certificate in force.<\/p>\n He later filed an appeal in the High Court against his conviction and sentence. Prosecutors\u00a0also appealed, seeking a stiffer sentence of between five and eight months\u2019 jail.<\/p>\n In February 2026, the High Court judge allowed the prosecution\u2019s appeal and\u00a0increased\u00a0Lim\u2019s sentence to imprisonment of three months and a week.<\/p>\n Lawyers in Singapore must apply for their practising certificates every practice year, which runs from April 1 to March 31 of the following year.<\/p>\n Lim failed to apply for a practising certificate by March 31, 2021, because he had trouble obtaining his professional indemnity insurance, a prerequisite for the application.<\/p>\n On Aug 8, two Singaporeans who allegedly helped him leave Singapore were charged.\u00a0<\/p>\n Mohammad Adam Abd Karim, 45, and Sulaiman Muhammad Firdaus, 38, were each handed one count of engaging in a conspiracy to commit an act that has a tendency to defeat the course of justice.<\/p>\n According to the charge sheets, the two men had allegedly made arrangements<\/span><\/a> for Lim to leave Singapore on Aug 4. Their cases are pending.<\/p>\n In April 2026, Lim\u00a0was also fined $30,000<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in a disciplinary case over his handling of a $30,000 cheque\u00a0that was\u00a0meant for his client.<\/p>\n The\u00a0Law Society of Singapore had\u00a0called for him to be struck off the rolls,<\/span><\/a> while he argued before the Court of Three Judges that a very small fine should be imposed instead.<\/p>\n Lim still has multiple pending charges for offences including harassment and criminal breach of trust as an attorney.<\/p>\n He is currently serving his sentence for practising law without a valid certificate, and his pre-trial conference is scheduled for Oct 23.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n SINGAPORE \u2013\u00a0Lawyer and opposition politician Lim Tean was handed three additional charges on Oct 9.
