class=\"dateline\">KUALA LUMPUR<\/span> <!-- -->\u2013 <!-- -->Passengers were left in the lurch after the Malaysian authorities suspended popular express bus service Aeroline for not operating from an out-of-town transport hub, exposing gaps in Kuala Lumpur\u2019s transport planning and last-mile connectivity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Malaysia\u2019s Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/se-asia\/malaysian-coach-operator-aeroline-temporarily-suspends-trips-from-nov-6-to-dec-5?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">suspended Aeroline\u2019s operating licence<\/p>\n<p><\/a> from Nov 6 to Dec 5, saying the company breached regulations by operating from unauthorised locations in the Malaysian capital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In a statement on Nov 2, Apad said the operator had been found operating outside designated bus terminals on three occasions between February and October 2025. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Apad also accused Aeroline of abusing its express bus licence by picking up and dropping off passengers at unauthorised locations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Straits Times contacted Aeroline for comments but was told the firm is not ready to speak on the matter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The<!-- --> company services routes from Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru in Malaysia, as well as Singapore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The suspension hit passengers like Ms Iyra Zainal, a Malaysian working in Singapore who has relied on Aeroline for cross-border travel over the past four years, making up to six trips a month to visit her ailing parents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI engage their services as a convenient, safe and affordable mode of transportation to see family and friends in Kuala Lumpur over the weekend,\u201d Ms Iyra told ST, calling the suspension \u201chighly disruptive\u201d and disappointing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In her early 40s and employed as a trader in the energy sector since 2021, she said that her planned trips on Nov 21 and 23 have been affected, while plans for December remain uncertain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI am still puzzled as to why, after 23 years of being in operation, Aeroline has been subject to the recent directive,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Singapore-based Malaysian citizen Akmal Afandi Azhar, 37, who travels back and forth between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur every month, said that the authorities should consider a more flexible approach in balancing convenience and order.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cSingapore and London allow limited city pickups through designated bays and permit systems, ensuring smooth traffic flow without penalising bus operators,\u201d said Mr Akmal, who is a manager at a real estate business in Singapore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWith proper scheduling and enforcement, there\u2019s no reason Malaysia can\u2019t adopt a similar system for reputable operators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">With his November trips cancelled, he foresees fewer trips in the future if Aeroline\u2019s service is interrupted further. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Several<!-- --> other companies, including StarMart Express, Grassland Coach and Eltabina, also pick up passengers in Kuala Lumpur\u2019s city centre around the Bukit Bintang district.<\/p>\n<p>These companies also service the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore route.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">But in an Oct 15 notice, Apad had banned all express bus passenger pickups and drop-offs from downtown areas in the capital. The ban came into force on Nov 1, which was met with public criticism online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Apad defended the action as a measure to ensure passenger safety, reduce traffic congestion in the city centre, and help Kuala Lumpur City Hall manage order within the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Express bus services used to be centred at the Puduraya terminal downtown. To ease traffic, the government began relocating hubs to the city\u2019s outskirts, consolidating operations in 2011 at the RM570 million (S$177 million) Southern Integrated Terminal (TBS) in Bandar Tasik Selatan, around a 30-minute drive from the city centre.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"landscape inline-media-wrapper\" data-testid=\"inline-media-test-id\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-col items-start relative w-fit\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 480px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/d13505caf63c487cd57df519adb809e3587302ede95b47a2004707d36635f519?w=480\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 720px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/d13505caf63c487cd57df519adb809e3587302ede95b47a2004707d36635f519?w=720\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 721px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/d13505caf63c487cd57df519adb809e3587302ede95b47a2004707d36635f519?w=900\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/d13505caf63c487cd57df519adb809e3587302ede95b47a2004707d36635f519\" alt=\"\" class=\"aspect-landscape flex items-start shrink-0 object-cover landscape article-landscape mobile:w-screen tablet:w-auto\" data-testid=\"image-test-id\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/picture><\/div><figcaption class=\"mobile:mx-16 tablet:mx-00 flex flex-col gap-08 py-16 desktop:pb-24\">\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-secondary\" data-testid=\"inline-media-caption-test-id\">Express bus services, especially to the south, have been consolidated at the Southern Integrated Terminal in Bandar Tasik Selatan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-placeholder\" data-testid=\"inline-media-credit-test-id\">PHOTO: BERNAMA<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">TBS is connected by the Express Rail Link to the airport, and by the KTM railway and LRT lines to the rest of Klang Valley.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">However, its distance from central and western suburbs such as Damansara and Petaling Jaya forces passengers to spend up to an extra hour on public transport, or pay more for ride-hailing services to reach their destinations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Another hub, the Gombak Integrated Terminal, was opened in\u00a0September<!-- -->\u00a0to<!-- --> cater for bus journeys\u00a0between Kuala Lumpur and the\u00a0states on the peninsula\u2019s East Coast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Aeroline has instead been operating from a hotel on Jalan Ampang \u2013 across from the Petronas Twin Towers \u2013 in downtown KL. It also stops at the 1 Utama and Sunway Pyramid shopping malls in Damansara and Subang Jaya respectively, catering to commuters in those districts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In Singapore, the company operates from HarbourFront Centre in Keppel Bay with no regulatory issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">On a bus enthusiast group on Facebook, one user called for flexibility for passengers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThe regulations on the pickup and drop-off points should not be as rigid as boarding a plane,\u201d said Ahmad Shahar on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Malaysian urbanists and planners told ST that the issue highlighted the disconnect between bureaucratic planning and actual public needs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Public transport advocate Ernest Wong said that while TBS is well-connected to rail, it remains inconvenient for many.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cA lot of people are miffed at the idea of changing trains, and private hire is expensive,\u201d Mr Wong said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He added that frustration with TBS goes beyond its location.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cMany facilities such as toilets are in poor condition, and the exterior links to rail and city buses are unsafe, with narrow corridors and poorly lit bus stands at night,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Meanwhile, Mr Badrul Hisham Ismail at the Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity research group, said Malaysia\u2019s transport policies are often drawn up from the top down to appear orderly on paper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThe main problem with public transportation in Malaysia is the first-and-last-mile gap.
