We hope parents can reinforce these lessons at home, so that preparedness becomes a habit from (a) young (age).\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The kindergarten\u2019s centre head Rico Chan said that the pre-schoolers easily understood the concept of a stranger carrying a suspicious item into school and that they should run away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI think a lot of times, it\u2019s about managing them and telling them that the teachers are there with them&#8230; (and) it\u2019s also important to remain orderly and listen to the instructions,\u201d Chan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Prime Minister Lawrence Wong had said recently that many years of peace and security here may result in Singaporeans \u201cletting their guard down\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In a speech on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/singapore-cannot-let-its-guard-down-and-be-complacent-about-peace-and-security-pm-wong?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">Sept 23 to commemorate SGSecure\u2019s 10th anniversary<\/span><\/a>, he also said that the sense of safety in Singapore should not be taken for granted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He noted reports of close calls involving the authorities stopping potential lone-wolf attacks just weeks before the planned attacks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The self-radicalised individuals include a 17-year-old whom the Internal Security Department (ISD) detained in 2024 while he was devising an attack at a neighbourhood centre near Tampines West Community Club.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe managed to intervene in time before anyone was hurt. But things could have turned out very differently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWhat if one day, despite our best efforts, something gets through? No security system can give us a 100 per cent guarantee,\u201d PM Wong said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">On Sept 10, 2026, ISD\u2019s annual threat assessment report showed that the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East are contributing to the high terrorism threat facing Singapore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The report noted that the conflicts have contributed to growing hostilities between communities. While anti-Semitism has surged in many parts of the world, so has anti-Muslim rhetoric and Islamophobia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">ISD said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/courts-crime\/recent-developments-in-youth-radicalisation-landscape-a-worrying-trend-shanmugam?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">youth radicalisation is also a pressing concern<\/span><\/a>, with cases involving young people almost quadrupling from\u00a0four between 2017 and 2021 to 15 <!-- -->since<!-- --> 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Since July 2025, <!-- -->six out of eight<!-- --> new Internal Security Act cases involved young people below the age of 21.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In the region, some schools have faced violent attacks over the past year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">On Aug 7, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/se-asia\/shooting-takes-place-at-school-in-thailand-officials-say?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">a 14-year-old student in Thailand killed seven people<\/span><\/a> including teachers, and injured 23 others in a shooting rampage at a school near Bangkok. He later took his own life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In the southern Philippines, a Sept 18 high-school shooting left three students dead and eight injured, marking the country\u2019s third school attack in under <!-- -->three months<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In Jakarta, over 90 people were injured on Nov 7, 2025, after a 17-year-old student detonated explosives at a high school mosque during Friday prayers.
