{"id":90720,"date":"2026-10-06T17:17:08","date_gmt":"2026-10-06T09:17:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=90720"},"modified":"2026-10-06T17:17:08","modified_gmt":"2026-10-06T09:17:08","slug":"fresh-grads-taking-longer-to-secure-jobs-retrenched-workers-finding-it-harder-to-land-new-jobs-jasmin-lau","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=90720","title":{"rendered":"Fresh grads taking longer to secure jobs, retrenched workers finding it harder to land new jobs: Jasmin Lau"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Different sectors recorded the lowest six-month re-entry rate for retrenched resident professionals, managers, executives and technicians (PMETs) from quarter to quarter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>But Ms Lau highlighted financial services as the sector that recorded the lowest rate most often over the past 14 quarters, followed by the wholesale trade sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Degree-holders continue to be the largest group affected by retrenchments, with the percentage increasing from 51 per cent in 2021 to 66.4 per cent in 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Ms Lau said the statistics show there is \u201cno single experience of retrenchment\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>\u201cSome workers are able to move into new jobs relatively quickly, while others may face greater difficulties because of their skills, occupation, age, or the sector they were previously working in,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>\u201cSome are able to find new jobs with the same or higher wages, but others may experience pay reduction.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>ONGOING REVIEW OF EMPLOYMENT ACT<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Ms Lau said the Manpower Ministry and its tripartite partners are reviewing the Employment Act, including retrenchment benefits, which are not currently a statutory requirement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>The review will cover whether stronger obligations on employers are warranted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>She said around 88 per cent of employers paid retrenchment benefits to employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Of the employers who did not pay retrenchment benefits, one in five indicated that they had financial difficulties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>\u201cThe rest said that they did not pay due to other reasons, including the lack of an obligation to do so, or because the employee was given other forms of support, such as keeping them on payroll for an extended period or employment assistance payout,\u201d said Ms Lau.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<center><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelnewsasia.com\/singapore\/retrenchments-jobs-fresh-graduates-labour-market-6435696\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read Full Article At Source <\/a><br \/>\n<center\/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Different sectors recorded the lowest six-month re-entry rate for retrenched resident professionals, managers, executives and technicians (PMETs) from quarter to quarter.
