\u201cAt the moment, it\u2019s about 23 degrees Celsius [73 degrees Fahrenheit],\u201d says new hotelier Cheryl Kwok, looking out of her window on a recent overcast afternoon. \u201cThe rainy season is just about to start, so we\u2019ve got a little drizzle. At night, it might drop to 14 or 16 degrees.\u201d<\/p>\n

It may come as a surprise that Kwok, a native Singaporean and former Hong Kong resident, is based in Bali. The island is not exactly known for sweater weather or heated swimming pools, but that is precisely what she offers at her newly opened Buyan Lakeside Villas.<\/p>\n

Unlike Bali\u2019s hot and humid tourist traps such as Canggu<\/span>, Denpasar and Seminyak, Kwok\u2019s retreat sits high up in the mist-covered mountains of north Bali, at an elevation of 1,300 metres (4,265 feet). One of the four sacred lakes of the island, Lake Buyan is surrounded by tropical rainforest and enjoys a cool, almost alpine climate.<\/div>\n

\u201cWe first came up here when Covid happened,\u201d says Kwok, who previously lived in Canggu. \u201cWe spent a few days here, went to the golf course [the Handara Golf & Resort, set within an ancient volcanic caldera] and thought the area was beautiful. There was literally nothing else, not a decent restaurant for miles and nowhere luxurious to stay. That\u2019s when I thought, \u2018Why don\u2019t I build something?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
