SINGAPORE \u2013 Ninety-one deregistered vehicles were impounded after an islandwide crackdown in September, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the police said in a joint statement on Oct 5.<\/p>\n
This comes on the back of an increase in reported cases of deregistered vehicles used on Singapore roads,<\/span><\/a> from 75 in 2024 to 245 in 2025, the authorities had said in September.<\/p>\n Measures to curb such offences have been tightened.<\/p>\n The maximum penalties for keeping or using unregistered or deregistered vehicles were raised in February 2026.<\/p>\n First-time offenders will be fined up to $20,000 and\/or jailed for up to two years. For repeat offenders, the penalties will be doubled.<\/p>\n The use of deregistered vehicles poses a serious road safety risk as they are neither roadworthy nor have valid insurance, said the authorities. They also lack valid certificates of entitlement or road tax.<\/p>\n Additional measures are planned for the enforcement of timely and proper disposal of deregistered vehicles.<\/p>\n These include the Authorised Exporter Scheme<\/span><\/a> requiring deregistered vehicles to be exported through LTA-authorised exporters. This scheme will address the risk of rogue exporters failing to properly dispose of or export deregistered vehicles, said LTA.<\/p>\n Second, the grace period for owners of deregistered vehicles to fulfil the disposal requirements will be shortened from one month to 14 days.<\/p>\n The third measure holds offenders liable for prosecution for failing to fulfil disposal requirements. Those convicted will be liable for a daily fine of up to $500 until proof of disposal has been submitted.<\/p>\n The fourth planned move aims to prevent new and used vehicles from being registered by or transferred to individuals who are at risk of failing to dispose of the vehicles when they are deregistered. Such individuals include those with past deregistration offences and those under 18<\/span><\/a> <\/span><\/a>who may be vulnerable to exploitation<\/span><\/a> by criminal syndicates.<\/p>\n The authorities had said on Sept 8 that enforcement efforts against deregistered vehicles would be stepped up.<\/p>\n From September, deregistered vehicles detected during LTA and police patrols will be wheel-clamped for seizure by the LTA.
