{"id":9044,"date":"2025-11-05T12:27:33","date_gmt":"2025-11-05T04:27:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=9044"},"modified":"2025-11-05T12:27:33","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T04:27:33","slug":"behind-every-indelible-picture-an-inspiring-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=9044","title":{"rendered":"Behind every indelible picture, an inspiring story"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE &#8211; <!-- -->At the top of an escalator, I wait eagerly for Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam to<!-- --> <!-- -->ride up on it.<!-- --> He is supposed to address the media after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/landslide-704-per-cent-victory-for-president-elect-tharman?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">securing 70 per cent of the sample vote<\/p>\n<p><\/a> in the 2023 Presidential Election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">I move away from the scrum, anticipating to snap a picture that would look as though he was<!-- --> <!-- -->on the ascendant<!-- -->. Initially facing away, he turns and it seems I will capture what I have envisioned. But after some cheers from his supporters, he turns and leaves the hawker centre. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Instead, I snap this picture: The lines of the escalator handrails lead the eye towards Mr Tharman and his spouse, Ms Jane Ittogi, as they stand amid a sea of jubilant supporters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Little did I expect that it would be on the front page of the next day\u2019s paper, <!-- -->showing me anew how a picture can contain and convey deep emotions<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Growing up, I collected all kinds of pictures \u2013 newspaper clippings, stamps, postcards, you name it. That was when I knew I wanted to become a photojournalist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Since joining The <!-- -->Straits Times<!-- --> in 2022, I have often found myself trawling through its archives <!-- -->to find inspiration<!-- -->. Naturally, I raised my hand when the opportunity came to help curate the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/singapores-history-seen-through-the-lenses-of-st-photojournalists-at-upcoming-exhibition?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">Singapore Stories: The Heart Of A Nation exhibition<\/p>\n<p><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The exhibition, which runs from Nov 7 to 23 at Selegie Arts Centre, captures Singapore\u2019s growth from a British colony to a First World nation in more than 200 pictures. (While ST\u2019s first edition was published on July 15, 1845, the newspaper carried photographs only decades later, from 1931.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Working on the exhibition also gave me the opportunity to uncover the stories behind some of the defining pictures.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Looking through<!-- --> former ST executive photojournalist George Gascon\u2019s<!-- --> photos of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, I often wondered how he captured such candid images of a towering figure and went on to become the late founding prime minister\u2019s preferred photographer.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"default inline-media-wrapper\" data-testid=\"inline-media-test-id\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-col items-start relative w-fit\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 480px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/7d706b10cd2356145bc04c07cb5381507daa9af78bf41d139764eaca35d83f82?w=480\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 720px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/7d706b10cd2356145bc04c07cb5381507daa9af78bf41d139764eaca35d83f82?w=720\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 721px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/7d706b10cd2356145bc04c07cb5381507daa9af78bf41d139764eaca35d83f82?w=900\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/7d706b10cd2356145bc04c07cb5381507daa9af78bf41d139764eaca35d83f82\" alt=\"\" class=\"aspect-default flex items-start shrink-0 object-cover default article-default mobile:w-screen tablet:w-auto\" data-testid=\"image-test-id\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/picture><\/div><figcaption class=\"mobile:mx-16 tablet:mx-00 flex flex-col gap-08 py-16 desktop:pb-24\">\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-secondary\" data-testid=\"inline-media-caption-test-id\">Founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew\u2019s wife Kwa Geok Choo watching as a make-up artist got him ready for the 2001 National Day Rally. Known for her attention to detail, she once interrupted the taping of an interview to touch up his hair and make-up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-placeholder\" data-testid=\"inline-media-credit-test-id\">ST PHOTO: GEORGE GASCON<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">George shared how one shoot with Mr Lee changed everything.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In 1995, the paper needed pictures of Mr Lee for the book Lee Kuan Yew: The Man And His Ideas. Mr Lee was not known to be an easy subject; the first photographer assigned to the job had managed to get just 17 shots before being told the session was over. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">George was asked to set up lights, but he chose to work with natural lighting, which he preferred. The night before, he practised his breathing techniques in order to hold<!-- --> the camera steady<!-- -->.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">His first thought on seeing Mr Lee up close <!-- -->on the day of the shoot<!-- --> <!-- -->was: \u201cHow can I humanise him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">An editor urged George to start shooting quickly, as they were unsure how much time he would be given for photos. I don\u2019t want a caption to lead the story. Despite just taking just two rolls of film to every assignment, he always came back with special moments. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">On his living room wall hangs an iconic picture he shot at a 1986 World Cup match in Mexico between Spain and Brazil. Spain\u2019s Miguel Gonzalez made a 20m shot that crossed the goal line, but the referee disallowed it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-placeholder\" data-testid=\"inline-media-credit-test-id\">ST PHOTO: JERRY SEH<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">When Jerry first applied to work as a photojournalist at ST, there was no vacancy and he had to be a \u201cmachine boy\u201d, or someone who maintained the printing press, for two years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Eventually, he became a photographer, first for New Nation from 1970, and then in ST from 1982. His words struck a chord with me, as I have often beat myself for letting a moment slip by.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In encouragement, he said: \u201cAs a photographer, you must be patient. Don\u2019t lose your temper. Sometimes you will miss things, maybe you\u2019re too fast or slow. But the important thing is you must learn from it.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Picture editors play an important role as a bridge between photojournalists and editors in the newsroom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">ST\u2019s former picture editor Stephanie Yeow, 54, now deputy head of visualisation, told me of the time she fought so hard for a picture to be used that she teared up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In 2006, <!-- -->executive photojournalist<!-- --> Wong Kwai Chow spotted the name T.T. Durai, then National Kidney Foundation (NKF) chief executive, in the visitors\u2019 logbook at Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB). At that time, news had broken that Durai had mismanaged funds for lavish and personal use at the NKF.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Together with a reporter, Kwai Chow monitored everyone leaving the CPIB building. But one detail stood out: a ring.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Stephanie immediately searched the photo archives and confirmed it was Durai\u2019s ring, and pushed for the picture to be used the following day. Up to that point, there were no published photos in the media of Durai taken after the scandal broke.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The night editor opposed running the unorthodox image, as he was not entirely sure the man in the car was Durai.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI was livid. I was so angry that my eyes welled up with tears because <!-- -->Kwai Chow<!-- --> put so much effort into getting this picture but it was not going to see the light of day,\u201d Stephanie said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In the end, the photo ran in the paper after the night editor was convinced the man was indeed Durai and the call was a correct one. Reports indicated she had spent the night at a KTV lounge with the house owner before entering the pool and drowning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ms Li had come to Singapore seeking a better life, but her dreams were cut short. Her family came from China to take her remains home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">When the family allowed ST to follow them back to Heilongjiang province, Xiaobin seized the opportunity, seeing a chance to tell a story beyond the headlines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThere was no reason not to go. (The family) gave us<b> <\/b>access, and I was the one who was able to go,\u201d she said. My first feature became a guiding principle.
