The division featured players aged <!-- -->16 and under<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">For James, though, the placing did not matter. Just competing on stage <!-- -->at<!-- --> the <!-- -->Foochow Building in Jalan Besar<!-- -->, in front of <!-- -->almost a hundred people,<!-- --> was a milestone in his yo-yo journey. He first picked up the activity in<!-- --> February 2024, and<!-- --> it has since grown into one he practises with zealous devotion.   <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Primary 2 pupil, who turned <!-- -->eight<!-- --> shortly after the competition, told The Straits Times: \u201cThe best part is learning new tricks and showing them to my family and friends. It makes me really happy, and I never get bored with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">James is part of a group of peppy young players fronting a refreshed wave of interest here in the decades-old hobby.   <\/p>\n<p>Since <!-- -->August 2024<!-- -->, he regularly attends yo-yo meet-ups, where about 30 other enthusiasts \u2013 most of whom are aged from <!-- -->seven to their 20s<!-- --> \u2013 band together to practise routines, and share tips and tricks.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Yo-yo wow!: 8-year-old James dazzles with his skills\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sBDziX9teuY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The monthly sessions are organised by <!-- -->Mr Marcus Koh, 32, f<!-- -->ounder of yo-yo company <!-- -->ThrowRevolution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">While the yo-yo is a popular pastime enjoyed by generations, hype around the \u201cmodern\u201d yo-yo \u2013 featuring sophisticated parts like ball bearings \u2013 landed in Singapore in the <!-- -->1990s,<!-- --> buoyed by the popularity of the <!-- -->ProYo by American maker Playmaxx<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p>A product of that era, Mr Koh went on to become a yo-yo world champion \u2013 the sole Singaporean to do so \u2013 in <!-- -->2011, and in 2015,<!-- --> began mentoring ardent up-and-comers like James.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He recalled how yo-yo speciality shop <!-- -->Spinworkx<!-- --> \u2013 a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/lifestyle\/new-wave-of-young-yo-yo-players-is-keeping-the-age-old-hobby-sport-alive?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">former hangout spot<\/p>\n<p><\/a> and organiser <!-- -->of<!-- --> the <!-- -->Singapore Yo-yo Championship<!-- --> \u2013 closed its physical shop in <!-- -->Orchard Central in 2020<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">And by the time the pandemic was over, the yo-yo scene was \u201cpractically dead\u201d, Mr Koh said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThat\u2019s when I decided to step up and take the lead,\u201d Mr Koh said. He began organising yo-yo meet-ups in <!-- -->2022<!-- -->. Recently, they have been held <!-- -->at<!-- --> the \u201c<!-- -->100 Plus Promenade\u201d at the National Stadium<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"landscape inline-media-wrapper\" data-testid=\"inline-media-test-id\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-col items-start relative w-fit\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 480px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/9a9444ab2bcd3bd5ef32aba6eb25f4025fa9a1260700e16ed4f455a1921e0124?w=480\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 720px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/9a9444ab2bcd3bd5ef32aba6eb25f4025fa9a1260700e16ed4f455a1921e0124?w=720\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 721px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/9a9444ab2bcd3bd5ef32aba6eb25f4025fa9a1260700e16ed4f455a1921e0124?w=900\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/9a9444ab2bcd3bd5ef32aba6eb25f4025fa9a1260700e16ed4f455a1921e0124\" alt=\"\" class=\"aspect-landscape flex items-start shrink-0 object-cover landscape article-landscape mobile:w-screen tablet:w-auto\" data-testid=\"image-test-id\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/picture><\/div><figcaption class=\"mobile:mx-16 tablet:mx-00 flex flex-col gap-08 py-16 desktop:pb-24\">\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-secondary\" data-testid=\"inline-media-caption-test-id\">The yo-yo meet-ups organised by Mr Marcus Koh, founder of yo-yo company ThrowRevolution, draws a crowd of about 30 attendees each month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-placeholder\" data-testid=\"inline-media-credit-test-id\">ST PHOTO: ARIFFIN JAMAR<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">There have been encouraging signs for the scene.<\/p>\n<p>Local yo-yo retailer <!-- -->Yoyoshopsg<!-- --> recorded a <!-- -->15 per cent increase in yo-yo orders between January and August 2025, compared with the same period in 2024<!-- -->.<!-- --> About a third of all yo-yos<!-- --> sold in 2025 are beginner models, priced between <!-- -->$7 and $30<!-- -->, its founder <!-- -->Jonathan Lee<!-- --> told ST.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Many of his customers are parents buying yo-yos for their children, typically under 12, who developed an interest in yo-yos after seeing viral videos online, Mr Lee said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This is the appeal of players who shape the competitive scene, dubbed \u201cyo-yo influencers\u201d by <!-- -->Spinworkx co-founder Colin Wan, 45.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">One video of <!-- -->22-year-old eight-time world champion Hajime Miura from Japan<!-- -->, whom Mr Wan cited as an example, garnered <!-- -->more than 800,000 likes on TikTok<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Inspiration can be found close to home, too. James, for example, counts Mr Koh and <!-- -->Mr Xavier Ng \u2013 the reigning and four-time local champion<!-- --> \u2013 as his \u201cidols in the yo-yo world\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">James\u2019 mother, <!-- -->Ms Grape Wongsongja, 39<!-- -->, said that yo-yoing is an alternative to screen time and has become a social bridge for James.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cIn a world where so much of childhood is spent staring at screens, whether for learning or entertainment, many kids and parents crave something that feels more tangible, more physical, and just\u2026 real,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Wan added: \u201cIn the past, parents used to be quite sceptical about yo-yos. To them, it\u2019s a distraction from studies. Now, yo-yos are seen as something to get kids off their mobile phones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Wan has observed more supportive parents, like <!-- -->Ms Wongsongja<!-- -->, tagging along for yo-yo meets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr <!-- -->Soh Peng Kai, 44<!-- -->, who accompanies his <!-- -->nine-year-old<!-- --> son to the gatherings, said: \u201cWe go because it\u2019s amazing to see him surrounded by people who share the same passion. And honestly, it\u2019s fun for us too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He, too, started to grow curious about yo-yos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve tried a few tricks myself. My wife too. Since <!-- -->2024<!-- -->, the Yo-yo Association of Singapore has also been taking the activity to seniors at active ageing centres islandwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Dr Nur Farhan Alami, who specialises in geriatric medicine and co-founded Alami Clinic, said practising the activity can give the elderly a sense of purpose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cIn terms of physical benefits, yo-yoing can develop their fine motor skills and help improve hand-eye coordination,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The yo-yo association relies on community outreach efforts like these to grow the activity, which has not been officially recognised as an urban sport or a performing art here.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Chong Yichen, the association\u2019s chairman<!-- -->, said this ambiguity on how to define the activity has also meant the association faces added challenges in fund-raising efforts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Wan said: \u201cYo-yoing has always been in a weird position&#8230; so it\u2019s important for it to be community-driven.\u201d In <!-- -->2003, he co-founded the Asia-Pacific Yo-yo Championships<!-- -->, touted as Asia\u2019s premier yo-yo contest, although it has not been held <!-- -->since 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The competition, since rebranded as the <!-- -->AP Yo-yo Open<!-- -->, will make its return in <!-- -->March 2026<!-- --> after <!-- -->a six-year hiatus<!-- -->.
