{"id":90276,"date":"2026-10-05T01:31:04","date_gmt":"2026-10-04T17:31:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=90276"},"modified":"2026-10-05T01:31:04","modified_gmt":"2026-10-04T17:31:04","slug":"six-charged-over-participation-in-unlawful-assemblies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=90276","title":{"rendered":"Six charged over participation in unlawful assemblies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text-primary article-summary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 <!-- -->Six individuals were hauled to court on Sept 28 and handed<a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/courts-crime\/six-to-face-charges-after-allegedly-taking-part-in-unlawful-assembly-at-changi-prison-state-courts?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\"> charges over their alleged participation in unlawful public assemblies and processions<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Several of them were previously investigated for similar offences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The six are: Howe Wen Khong Rocky, 31; Ten Leu Jiun Jeanne-Marie, 56; Annamalai Kokila Parvathi, 38; Lim Kay Siu, 70; Winifred Neo Swee Lin, 63 and Han Li Ying Kirsten, 37.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Howe was handed four charges of participating in a\u00a0public assembly\u00a0without a permit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He is accused of participating in candlelight vigils near Changi Prison, which were held without a permit on Nov 22 and Nov 29, 2024 and Jan 23, 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He also allegedly took part in an assembly publicising the cause of abolishing capital punishment in Singapore on Feb 3, 2025. at 1 Havelock Road, where the State Courts is located.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Howe previously received a stern warning for similar offences committed in March and April 2022, and for obstruction of justice in March 2022, the police said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ten faces two charges for allegedly taking part in public assemblies without a permit on Nov 22 and Nov 29, 2024, near Changi Prison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">She was previously issued a stern warning on Sept 18, 2026, over a public assembly held outside the State Courts on Feb 3, 2025.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Actors Lim Kay Siu and Neo Swee Lin among 6 charged over public assemblies without permit\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/49a5YPLQBXs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Lim, an actor, is accused of taking part in the same assembly outside the State Courts on Feb 3, 2025. Neo \u2013 who is married to Lim \u2013 and Han are facing the same charge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In a Sept 27 statement, the police said that Han was previously given penalties including stern warnings and a 12-month conditional warning over a number of offences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">These were for taking part in a public procession at the Ministry of Home Affairs in June 2024, her involvement in public assemblies without a permit in July 2017, March 2022 and April 2022, and for obstruction of justice in March 2022 and April 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Annamalai was handed one charge for her alleged participation in the Feb 3, 2025 assembly outside the State Courts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">She is already facing a separate charge for failing to comply with a correction direction on Oct 6, 2024. This case is set to go to trial on Oct 7.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Annamalai was previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/courts-crime\/3-women-who-organised-procession-outside-istana-each-fined-3k-after-high-court-overturns-acquittal?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">handed a $3,000 fine<\/span><\/a> and issued a 24-month conditional warning for organising public processions\u00a0to the Istana without a permit\u00a0in June 2017 and January 2021, as well as on Feb 2, 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Lawyer Derek Wong, who appeared on behalf of five of the six, sought an adjournment of four weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He asked for his clients to be released without bail, saying they are facing offences that carry fines.
