{"id":90037,"date":"2026-10-04T01:34:16","date_gmt":"2026-10-03T17:34:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=90037"},"modified":"2026-10-04T01:34:16","modified_gmt":"2026-10-03T17:34:16","slug":"joo-chiat-road-car-free-day-attracts-over-5000-visitors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=90037","title":{"rendered":"Joo Chiat Road car-free day attracts over 5,000 visitors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text-primary article-summary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 <!-- -->Crowds descended on a half-kilometre car-free stretch of the heritage area at Joo Chiat Road on Oct 3 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/transport\/parts-of-joo-chiat-road-to-be-closed-off-to-traffic-on-oct-3-for-world-car-free-day?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">to mark World Car-Free Day<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">From 3.30pm to 9.30pm, the area between Dunman Road and East Coast Road was temporarily closed to traffic, as an endless stream of tourists and locals contributed to a carnival atmosphere as they forgot about the haze.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Over 5,000 people turned up, some with their children or bicycles in tow, checking out<!-- --> <!-- -->offerings from<!-- --> <!-- -->around 90<!-- --> <!-- -->merchants who set up shop along the road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This was the first time an area outside the Central Business District (CBD) was off-limits to cars and other vehicles <!-- -->to mark World Car-Free Day,<!-- --> an annual event which encourages people across the globe to explore more sustainable ways of commuting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Minister of State for Transport, and Culture, Community and Youth Baey Yam Keng<!-- --> <!-- -->mingled with the crowd and<!-- --> <!-- -->said walking and cycling <!-- -->allowed<!-- --> people to discover familiar and new neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He said: \u201cWe hope that people will also explore different parts of Singapore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Goh Pei Ming, MP for Marine Parade<!-- -->-Braddell Heights<!-- --> GRC, also popped by and called it a very special milestone for the constituency. They\u2019re asking<!-- --> <!-- -->if it can be an<!-- --> <!-- -->annual event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Gallery+ Katong, an artisan gallery<!-- --> which opened a year ago and sells locally designed products<!-- -->, was packed barely an hour into the event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ng Hwee Hong, the co-owner of Soap Craft Singapore, which runs the gallery, said publicity is especially important for them, as they partner <!-- -->with<!-- --> small businesses and local artisans to raise the profile of Singaporean brands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">She said: \u201cThe vibe is very good. It\u2019s different from the usual weekend crowd. On Oct 3, he <!-- -->cycled for<!-- --> half an hour from Serangoon via the <!-- -->Park Connector Network<!-- --> to reach Joo Chiat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Natalie Tan, 27, a copywriter at an advertising agency, came after hearing about the event on TikTok.
