{"id":89892,"date":"2026-10-03T12:32:00","date_gmt":"2026-10-03T04:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=89892"},"modified":"2026-10-03T12:32:00","modified_gmt":"2026-10-03T04:32:00","slug":"haze-in-singapore-air-quality-deteriorating-psi-in-central-region-back-in-unhealthy-range","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=89892","title":{"rendered":"Haze in Singapore: Air quality\u00a0deteriorating; PSI in central region back in unhealthy range"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text-primary article-summary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 The air quality in Singapore deteriorated on Oct 3, with the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) reading at 11<!-- -->am<!-- --> dipping into the unhealthy range in the central region (102).<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Although they remained in the moderate range, the National Environment Agency\u2019s (NEA) PSI readings for <!-- -->all other regions also increased<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">At 6am, the readings in the north, south, east and west ranged from 73 to 88 before rising to between 76 and 94 at 11am.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">PM2.5 readings, which are used as a gauge for immediate activities, were in the elevated range in three of the five regions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The three regions were east, west and central, with a PM2.5 reading of 66, 57 and 63 respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Air quality is considered unhealthy when the 24-hour PSI is in the range of 101 to 200, while an hourly PM2.5 reading between 56 and 150 indicates an elevated concentration of fine particles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The PSI \u2013 a 24-hour rolling average of six key air pollutants and used in planning for outdoor activities the next day \u2013 last <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/haze-in-spore-air-quality-returns-to-moderate-levels-in-all-regions?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">crossed into the unhealthy range on Sept 30<\/span><\/a>. The day saw the entire island swathed in a fine milky haze, with the reading hitting a peak of 134 in central Singapore as at 1am.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"responsive-iframe-base st_visuals st_visuals-embed\" title=\"st_visuals embed\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/multimedia\/graphics\/2026\/08\/singapore-haze-widget\/index.html\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"accelerometer;falseclipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\" loading=\"eager\" data-testid=\"responsiveIframe\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The high for the year was <!-- -->167, recorded on Sept 29<!-- -->, also in the central region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In its daily haze advisory issued in the evening of Oct 2, the NEA said the PSI is forecast to be in the moderate to low unhealthy range.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It added that moderate to<!-- --> dense smoke plumes from southern Sumatra in neighbouring Indonesia were observed to be drifting towards Singapore<!-- -->. Smoke haze was also observed from<!-- --> fires in Kalimantan and the smoke haze could be transported towards Singapore under the prevailing south-easterly or southerly winds<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The PSI crossed into the unhealthy range four weeks ago, hitting 101 in central Singapore on the morning of Sept 4. In the days that followed, readings in the central, eastern and western parts of the island occasionally crossed into the unhealthy range.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The developments in September mark the first time since October 2023 that the PSI in Singapore hit unhealthy levels because of haze, with the authorities earlier warning of the risk of haze between June and October as a result of warmer and drier conditions brought on by both El Nino and the Indian Ocean Dipole.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Some experts have predicted that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/environment\/relief-from-heat-could-come-only-end-october-as-strong-el-nino-extends-dry-season-met-service?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">haze in Singapore <\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/environment\/relief-from-heat-could-come-only-end-october-as-strong-el-nino-extends-dry-season-met-service?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">in 2026<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/environment\/relief-from-heat-could-come-only-end-october-as-strong-el-nino-extends-dry-season-met-service?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\"> could last for a longer period<\/span><\/a> due to the \u201cGodzilla\u201d El Nino event, which could reduce rainfall and result in higher temperatures over October and November, compared with non-El Nino years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">During non-El Nino years, the dry south-west monsoon season usually tapers off by September and the start of the rainy north-east monsoon season tends to set in around late November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) told The Straits Times that El Nino events, particularly strong ones, tend to delay the retreat of the dry season for much of the southern ASEAN region and that the MSS is expecting a transition only during late October or early November for Singapore, later than
