Ever heard of lipoprotein(a)? Don\u2019t worry if you have not. That is the name of a cardiovascular risk factor that many people are genuinely unaware of.<\/p>\n

Two experts explain why it makes sense to have this value measured with a blood test at least once, and what to do if the result turns out to be too high.<\/p>\n

What exactly is lipoprotein(a)?<\/h3>\n
Lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), is a component of the blood. \u201cIt is structured like \u2018bad\u2019 LDL cholesterol<\/span>,\u201d says Anja Vogt, a specialist in internal medicine and deputy chair of a lipid disorders association in Germany.<\/div>\n

The difference is that an additional protein, apolipoprotein(a), is bound to it. According to the association, lipoproteins can be compared to \u201cfreight taxis\u201d that transport fat and fatlike substances through the blood.<\/p>\n

How much Lp(a) circulates in the blood is genetically determined. Diet and exercise cannot influence the level. \u201cLp(a) probably once had a physiological role and may even have conferred an evolutionary advantage, but today it has no known benefit,\u201d Vogt says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
