Munich\u2019s Oktoberfest<\/span> was never on my travel bucket list. But it offered a chance to meet up with good friends from Hong Kong and their adorable toddler, Joshua, who go to the festival every year as a family. So there I was, spending a weekend at Theresienwiese, surrounded by bewildering varieties of beer and their drinkers.<\/div>\n
The annual Oktoberfest, first held in October 1810 to celebrate a royal wedding, is about more than just beer<\/span>. There are amusement rides, games, stalls selling things you never knew you needed, and, of course, a staggering smorgasbord of hearty Bavarian food, which I happily enjoyed.<\/div>\n

Still, beer remains Oktoberfest\u2019s main draw. And this is where I must drop the bombshell: I do not like beer.<\/p>\n

Some quirk of my biology means that even a single glass leaves me feeling bloated and very uncomfortable. Over that weekend, I was hoping nobody would notice that I was nursing a single tankard of leichtbier<\/em> (\u201clight beer\u201d) throughout each day while discreetly drinking copious amounts of fizzy water.<\/p>\n

Beer enthusiasts will probably be happy to know that thousands of years ago, people in ancient China made li<\/em>, an early fermented grain drink whose brewing method shares a fundamental principle with beer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
