Directly opposite the entrance to her 1,300 sq ft (120 square metre) home are French doors that lead onto a balcony and frame a lush vista of what feels like at least 50 shades of green. Architect Liz Lau Win-wa was so captivated by the nature on Chan’s doorstep that she used it as the starting point for the design concept after being commissioned to revamp the flat.

“It is quite rare to find such a concentrated pocket of trees in a central location,” says Lau, founder of interior design studio Laud. “It both feels like Hong Kong and like somewhere else entirely. It was a great backdrop to work with and set the design tone for the apartment, driving a lot of the materials we picked.”

The original three-bedroom, two-bathroom flat had been owned and occupied by Chan’s parents for years, and by the time Lau saw it, it was crying out for a full renovation. With dark wood finishes and heavy furnishings reminiscent of the 1990s, the apartment felt cramped and dated. Lau responded by gutting the property and removing a poky bedroom and corridor to open up the living area and maximise the natural light.

To connect the various sections of the main space and give the apartment a more cohesive identity, she installed a full-height shelving cabinet along the length of the living and dining room and encased the flat’s central walls in oak – the kitchen, guest bathroom and a sewing room are behind them – playing with the direction of the wood grain to add interest.

It is almost impossible not to remark on the view from Rebecca Chan’s one-bedroom, one-study, two-bathroom flat in Hong Kong’s Mid-Levels.
