{"id":89593,"date":"2026-10-02T11:09:18","date_gmt":"2026-10-02T03:09:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=89593"},"modified":"2026-10-02T11:09:18","modified_gmt":"2026-10-02T03:09:18","slug":"acres-condemns-taped-up-bird-cruelty-in-incident","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=89593","title":{"rendered":"ACRES condemns taped-up bird cruelty in incident"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text-primary article-summary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 In videos that were posted online, a woman appears to handle a bird whose beak and wings have been taped up, prompting criticism from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/25-years-of-acres-local-charity-continues-wildlife-rescue-efforts-with-eye-on-expansion?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">animal welfare group Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES)<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Three of four videos accompanying a Sept 29 Facebook post, which is now unavailable, show the woman \u201cscolding\u201d a restrained bird, which looks to be a mynah. In the clips, the bird\u2019s beak, wings and legs appear to be taped up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">According to the woman, whose face does not appear in the videos, the bird had flown into her house repeatedly to eat her food.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">ACRES said in a media reply on Oct 1 that it is aware of the videos and is deeply disturbed by the content.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cAccording to the accompanying post, the bird was subjected to this treatment as \u2018punishment\u2019 for entering a home,\u201d ACRES said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThere is no justification for such cruelty. A bird entering someone\u2019s home does not deserve to be forcibly restrained, taped up and mistreated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The animal welfare group urged the authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly, and for a penalty that reflects the severity of the act to be meted out, if an offence is established.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It added that the Animals and Birds Act, \u201cwhich provides for offences involving animal cruelty\u201d, should be upheld \u201cwhether the animal is a beloved pet or a commonly encountered wild bird\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cNo animal should be considered undeserving of protection simply because they are common or perceived as a nuisance,\u201d ACRES said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In the first video, the woman can be heard referring to the bird as \u201chuai dan\u201d, a Chinese term used to refer to someone who has behaved poorly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI\u2019ll untie you if you admit you have been bad,\u201d the woman says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The bird, with its eyes wide open, can be heard shrieking loudly.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"No justification for such cruelty: Animal welfare group slams videos of mynah taped up and punished\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TtGzgGeebD8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">She then appears to prod the restrained bird in a plastic bag in the second clip, claiming in Hokkien that it had attempted to bite her after being caught.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The third video shows the bird trapped in a shoebox with several holes on its lid.
