Apple could finally be ready to enter the smart home hardware market, and a new report has revealed what its long-rumoured smart home hub could look like.

Bloomberg reports that Apple plans to unveil the device on 13 October. The smart home hub features a 6-inch square display connected to a round metal base via a polished metal arm. A rubberised bottom should help keep the device firmly in place on a countertop. In other words, it would resemble the iconic iMac G4.

The display reportedly features thick bezels, rounded corners, and a design that can tilt forward or backwards. A FaceTime camera sits on the front, while a virtual white ring around the screen can illuminate the user’s face to help with recognition.

Bloomberg says the smart home hub can recognise who is speaking to it or approaching the screen, then display information relevant to that particular person. That could include contacts, messages, calendar appointments, notes and other personalised content.

The system could also answer questions using information from the user’s Apple accounts, making the hub more like a personalised household assistant than a simple smart display.

Apple is reportedly using a combination of voice recognition and facial recognition to identify users. However, its facial recognition system is said to be less accurate than the Face ID technology found on the iPhone, so an iPhone may be required for secondary authentication.

That setup could allow the hub to support multiple users while still keeping personal information separated between family members.

Its interface is reportedly a hybrid of watchOS, iOS, and tvOS with iPad-like app designs, Apple Watch-style icons, and iPhone-style widgets.

The smart home hub can control connected devices, including thermostats, door locks, and other smart home accessories. It is also expected to support FaceTime video calls, intercom-style communication, music playback, and photo slideshows.

The smart home hub is expected to be one of the biggest showcases for Apple’s revamped Siri AI.

Initially planned for launch in 2025, Apple pushed back the timeline due to delays surrounding the development of the new Siri AI.

With Apple now rolling out its revamped Siri across the iPhone, iPad, Mac and other products, the timing makes more sense. The smart home hub could serve as a dedicated showcase for Siri’s more conversational and personalised capabilities.
