Qualcomm has announced the renewal of its global patent licensing agreement with Apple<\/b>, extending a relationship that has endured despite the two companies\u2019 complicated history.<\/p>\n
The renewed agreement will take effect on 1 April 2027<\/b> and requires Apple to pay royalties to Qualcomm for access to its global portfolio of patented technologies.<\/p>\n
This agreement should not be confused with Apple\u2019s separate modem supply agreement<\/b> with Qualcomm. Under that arrangement, Qualcomm continues to supply 5G modem chips to Apple through 2026, while Apple steadily increases the use of its own cellular modem across its products.<\/p>\n
That transition is already underway. Apple has been expanding its C-series modem lineup, with the iPhone 18 Pro models and iPhone Duo using the C2 modem globally, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max in the US continues to use a Qualcomm modem.<\/p>\n
The renewed patent deal therefore represents an interesting middle ground for Apple. Even as the company develops more of its own modems and reduces its dependence on Qualcomm, it still needs to license technologies covered by Qualcomm\u2019s extensive patent portfolio.<\/p>\n
Apple and Qualcomm have a history that is anything but straightforward. The two companies became embroiled in a major legal battle in 2017 when Apple sued Qualcomm over what it described as unfair and excessive royalty fees. Qualcomm countersued, accusing Apple of breaching its agreements and seeking its own damages.<\/p>\n
The dispute ended in\u00a02019 when both sides reached a settlement that included a multi-year patent licensing agreement and a chipset supply agreement.<\/p>\n
