SINGAPORE \u2013 The power to Bangkit LRT station had to be turned off late on Oct 27 so a drunk passenger who fell onto the train tracks could be rescued. <\/p>\n
Train operator SMRT told The Straits Times on Nov 4 that an intoxicated passenger fell onto the tracks at the station, which is part of the Bukit Panjang LRT line, at around 11.35pm that night. This was close to the time the last train was set to depart from the station, at 11.41pm.<\/p>\n
SMRT staff responded immediately by activating the emergency stop plunger that turned off traction power at the station, said president of SMRT Trains Lam Sheau Kai.<\/p>\n
Its operations control centre also stopped train service in the affected sector, he said.<\/p>\n
This prevented the passenger from being struck by a train, and the person was taken to hospital by the Singapore Civil Defence Force.<\/p>\n
\u201cSMRT takes a serious view of this incident as track intrusion poses severe safety risks,\u201d said Mr Lam.<\/p>\n
\u201cTrespassing onto train tracks is illegal, irresponsible and endangers not only the individual involved but also the safety of other commuters. It can also disrupt train services.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added that a police report has been made.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
