Several Facebook users\u2019 posts allegedly selling dog meat to customers in Singapore have drawn outrage from animal lovers.<\/p>\n
An anonymous member of the Dogs Singapore Facebook group reshared the posts, alleging that sellers are using social media to target clients in Singapore, mentioning \u201cvitamin g\u00e2u g\u00e2u\u201d \u2014 a Vietnamese slang term used to refer to dog meat \u2014 in their posts.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe seller is offering various types of dog meat dishes (such as grilled, steamed, and ribs) priced in dollars, targeted at consumers within Singapore,\u201d says the member.<\/p>\n
One of the posts, which has been taken down, was originally shared on the Ch\u1ee3 Vi\u1ec7t T\u1ea1i Singapore Facebook group \u2014 an online marketplace for Vietnamese goods and services.<\/p>\n
It referenced several cuts of meat, each with its own price.<\/p>\n

The post did not specify the animal being sold until the end, where it stated in Vietnamese: \u201cThis is the perfect set for a proper \u2018vitamin G\u00e2u G\u00e2u\u2019 feast!\u201d \u201cVitamin g\u00e2u g\u00e2u\u201d is a Vietnamese slang term commonly used to refer to dog meat, with \u201cg\u00e2u g\u00e2u\u201d used to imitate a dog\u2019s bark.<\/p>\n
The post also included pictures of raw meat cut into pieces, while other similar posts showed cooked meat. It is unclear what animals were shown in the pictures.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a severe violation of Singapore\u2019s food safety laws and an act of cruelty that our community cannot tolerate,\u201d the Dogs Singapore member added.<\/p>\n
The anonymous user added that they were in the midst of lodging a report with the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) and the Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS) with details of the registered company and PayNow information.<\/p>\n
The member also urged others in the group to share any more information on the matter.<\/p>\n
Netizens enraged by post allegedly selling dog meat<\/h2>\n
The reshared post, made on Sept 23, garnered more than 390 reactions and 140 comments before it was taken down.<\/p>\n
Netizens were outraged by the allegation that dog meat was being sold in Singapore.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is SHOCKING!! To see this kind of stuff operating in Singapore!\u201d said a Facebook user.<\/p>\n
\u201cOmg no way\u2026 Thank you for reporting to authorities,\u201d said another.<\/p>\n
One Facebook user called for action to be taken quickly, pointing out that the alleged seller was probably aware that someone might have reported her.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe closed her comments in FB for selling dog meat now. Need to report before she flees the country,\u201d said the netizen.<\/p>\n
Several were worried that lost dogs in Singapore may have been nabbed and slaughtered.<\/p>\n
\u201cMust quickly find them. Some dogs that are reported lost are never found\u2026 Gosh\u2026 I cannot imagine where they are!\u201d said one netizen.<\/p>\n
\u201cWalao, my neighbourhood got a dog went missing. They put up a missing dog notice at the lift around the neighbourhood. I hope they didn\u2019t catch and eat the missing dog,\u201d another said.<\/p>\n
SFA investigating the matter<\/h2>\n
In response to Stomp\u2019s queries, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said it is looking into the matter and has not approved any source of dog meat.<\/p>\n
The agency warned that illegally imported food products from unknown sources can pose food safety risks, adding that meat and meat products can only be imported by licensed importers from SFA-accredited sources.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is an offence to sell meat<\/a> and meat products that were imported without a valid licence or valid import permit,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n Those convicted of selling illegally imported meat<\/a> face a fine of up to $50,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both.<\/p>\n Repeat offenders face a fine of up to $100,000, imprisonment of up to three years, or both. Members of the public with food safety concerns can report them through SFA\u2019s online feedback form<\/a><\/p>\n The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA), which preceded the SFA, had previously stated that the sale of dog meat is not allowed in Singapore<\/a>.<\/p>\n Stomp has reached out to the Facebook user who shared the post, as well as AVS, for comment.<\/p>\n Editor\u2019s note: This article was updated with a response from the SFA.<\/em><\/p>\n Have something to say?
