Bandai Namco\u2019s new action game is coming to the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on <b>5 March 2027<\/b>, but this is not quite the Gundam that long-time fans will be familiar with.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">As someone who has always been a fan of Gundam\u2019s Universal Century timeline, I have mixed feelings about that. Personally, I would have liked to see Bandai Namco make a properly story-focused game set in the UC era, so I am a tad disappointed that Rogue Orbit is not it. That alone marks the bigget change for Gundam, whose conflicts are usually rooted in human politics, clashing ideologies and the consequences of war rather than a common non-human enemy. In some ways, the game feels like what you\u2019d expect from a Pacfic Rim game, where giant robots fight against kaijus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">The setting is part of Bandai Namco\u2019s wider <b>RG Project<\/b>. In this timeline, an autonomous object from another galaxy gives humanity several major technological advances before producing an aggressive, self-replicating ecosystem. Humanity is eventually forced to abandon Earth, and the game takes place 45 years later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">Players take on the role of ace pilot RE-X, who controls the new Gundam Helix with the help of Vii, a Haro intelligent-assistance unit. The footage shown at this year\u2019s Tokyo Game Show so far looks closer to a fast modern action game than the heavier, more methodical Mobile Suit combat some fans may expect. The Gundam Helix can dash across large environments and move between ground and aerial attacks. Players can also swap its weapons, frames, thrusters and Apocalypse Units, or AP-U.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">There is still plenty here that fans can recognise as a Gundam game, including Haro (fans really ought to know and customisable Mobile Suits. Yet by moving away from human conflict, Rogue Orbit risks losing some of the political complexity that gives Gundam its grounded identity \u2013 and that is my main reservation as a Gundam UC fan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">Still, being disappointed that this is not the story-focused Universal Century game I want does not mean I am writing it off.
