A 50-year-old man in Singapore is set to be charged over allegedly starting a fire near a mosque in the city\u2019s central business district. As Channel NewsAsia reports<\/a>, police received a report of the fire at about 9pm on Friday.<\/p>\n

Fire near the entrance<\/h2>\n

The incident occurred near a mosque at 80 Raffles Place. According to police, Masjid Moulana Mohamed Ali is located at that address, in the basement of UOB Plaza One.<\/p>\n

Investigators established that a container with oil had been placed near the mosque entrance, with an item of underwear put inside and set on fire. The suspect then left the scene.<\/p>\n

A member of the public extinguished the fire, and no one was injured in the incident, police said.<\/p>\n

Arrest and possible punishment<\/h2>\n

Police arrested the man less than three hours after the fire was reported. Officers also seized a lighter as evidence.<\/p>\n

If convicted of creating or contributing to the risk of a dangerous fire, the man could face up to one year in prison, a fine, or both.<\/p>\n
