The current-generation iPad mini is nearly two years old now and due for a refresh. Normally, this would be an easy thing for Apple to do. Put a new chip in, maybe improve the display and\/or connectivity, and call it a day. But it\u2019s not so simple this time because of a little thing called the iPhone Duo.<\/p>\n
The iPhone Duo is Apple\u2019s first foldable phone, and when it\u2019s unfolded, it looks and feels somewhat like an iPad mini<\/b>. They are not completely identical \u2013 the Duo continues to run iOS, while the iPad mini runs iPadOS \u2013 but the two certainly share similarities.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In my mind, the iPad mini needs a bit of a glow-up if it\u2019s to remain a compelling option for customers. Word on the street is that the next iPad mini will have an OLED display and that it will feature a water-resistant design \u2013 a first for an iPad. These two changes could yield numerous benefits and would make sense in Apple\u2019s lineup of iPads.<\/p>\n
An OLED display should mean better picture quality and power efficiency, while a water-resistant design would make the new iPad mini a more credible rival to e-book readers like the Kindle Paperwhite and Kobo Clara Colour. A lot of people like to do their reading next to sizeable bodies of water.<\/p>\n
Keen readers might point out that the Duo has an IP68 water resistance rating, but who in the right mind would want to take their S$3,000+ phone near water?<\/p>\n Would you get an iPad mini if you already have the iPhone Duo?<\/p>\n Photo: HWZ<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n \u00a0A new iPad mini at this point would also allow Apple to update the chip within so that it\u2019s more compatible with Siri AI and the latest suite of Apple Intelligence features and tools. This would then cement its position as a companion device for Mac users and customers not using the Duo. Although I haven\u2019t had the chance to live with a Duo, I can\u2019t see how someone might want a Duo and an iPad mini. The two kind of fill the same space.\u00a0<\/p>\n If the next iPad mini gains these improvements, and Apple manages to keep its price reasonable, it could very well end up becoming the ultimate compact tablet \u2013 or at the very least give e-book readers a real headache.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The current-generation iPad mini is nearly two years old now and due for a refresh.
