A man allegedly threw down several items, including a bicycle, from his flat on the 20th floor and locked himself in, resulting in a six-hour standoff with the police.<\/p>\n
The incident took place on Monday (Sept 21), at around 11am when the police received calls for assistance at Block 393, Bukit Batok West Avenue 5, Shin Min Daily News reported on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
When officers arrived, they noted that items had been thrown from a high floor of the block, the police told AsiaOne.<\/p>\n
It was later established that a 47-year-old man had locked himself in his unit and refused to open the door. He was arrested later.<\/p>\n
At the scene, Shin Min reporters noted that debris was strewn across the ground, including shoes, clothing, cardboard boxes, hair dryers, children’s scooters and a bicycle.<\/p>\n
A resident who declined to be named told Shin Min that she was disposing garbage when she saw things being tossed down.<\/p>\n
“At first it was just shoes, but later they even threw down a bicycle,” the resident said.<\/p>\n
“When people started seeing this, they quickly called the police.”<\/p>\n
Another resident also shared: “Luckily, no one was hit, otherwise the consequences would have been unimaginable.”<\/p>\n
Reporters also observed a large number of police and personnel from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) on scene as a safety air cushion was placed under the block and a safety net was set up above the unit.<\/p>\n
As it was assessed that the man posed a danger to himself, officers from the Special Operations Command, Crisis Negotiation Unit and SCDF were activated, the police said.<\/p>\n
At around 5pm, SCDF personnel began lowering the safety net, securing it at the window of the flat.<\/p>\n
Simultaneously, officers gained access to the unit by sawing through the iron gate, entering and arresting the man for the offence of rash act.<\/p>\n
No injuries were reported and police investigations are ongoing.<\/p>\n
