{"id":87304,"date":"2026-09-23T20:08:21","date_gmt":"2026-09-23T12:08:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=87304"},"modified":"2026-09-23T20:08:21","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T12:08:21","slug":"metal-meets-mongolian-throat-singing-and-instruments-in-uuhais-hong-kong-debut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=87304","title":{"rendered":"Metal meets Mongolian throat singing and instruments in Uuhai\u2019s Hong Kong debut"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.i-scmp.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/1280x720\/public\/d8\/images\/canvas\/2026\/09\/23\/243be1a7-c2b0-49f7-b0f3-9f7abe10ecae_1e034c9e.jpg?itok=ur_obKHS&amp;v=1790151280\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Mongolia and heavy metal are rarely mentioned in the same sentence, but folk metal band Uuhai are here to prove the music genre fuses surprisingly well with the nomadic culture\u2019s distinctive vocal and instrumental traditions.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Founded in the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar in 2020 by drummer and producer Otgonbaatar \u201cOmbo\u201d Damba, the band\u2019s current line-up features Damba, Khurtsgerel Damiranjav (horsehead fiddler and vocalist), Zorigoo Battsooj (horsehead fiddler and throat singer), Saruul Tsogt-Erdene (vocalist), Batbayar Dulamsuren (percussionist), Dalaitseren Nasanbuyan (guitarist) and Anand Naranbaatar (bass guitarist).<\/p>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">Their songs feature aggressive rock-metal beats while showcasing Unesco-recognised elements of Mongolian heritage, including <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Khoomei<\/em> (traditional <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">throat singing<\/span>), the <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">morin khuur<\/em> (horsehead fiddle) and long-song vocals carrying ancient lyrical themes.<\/div>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Uuhai began touring internationally a year after forming and have appeared at major European festivals, including on the Motocultor Across Europe 2026 tour. In 2025, their track \u201cKhar Khulz\u201d exploded online, gaining 8.8 million views on YouTube.
