The rudimentary cakes were flat and round, with a thin outer crust and fillings such as lotus seed paste or the auspicious <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">five kernels<\/span>.<\/div>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\">During the <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Yuan dynasty<\/span> (1279-1368), emperor-to-be Zhu Yuanzhang and his adviser Liu Bowen came up with the idea of placing hidden messages inside mooncakes that called for a revolution to overthrow the ruling Mongol Empire.<\/div>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\"><span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Mooncakes<\/span> continued to rise in popularity. During the <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Ming<\/span> (1368-1644) and <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Qing<\/span> (1644-1911) eras, mooncake artistry took shape, with intricate designs depicting flowers, birds and even deities commonly adorning the snacks.
