Google has just announced that the first Googlebooks are now available to pre-order and will go on sale in the US on 4 October. Announced in May, it\u2019s a whole new type of laptop that was designed to work with Android phones. The first Googlebooks will come from partners Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. But first, what\u2019s a Googlebook?<\/p>\n

What\u2019s a Googlebook and who is it for?<\/h2>\n

According to Google\u2019s head of laptops and tablets, John Maletis, Googlebooks were designed \u201cto work seamlessly with your Android phone.\u201d To do that, it runs Googlebook OS<\/b> \u2013 an OS that\u2019s based heavily on Android and looks somewhat like a cross between Android and ChromeOS.<\/p>\n

Once you connect your Android phone to a Googlebook, the two become an extension of each other. Notifications are shared, as are files and photos, and you can even run apps on your phone on the Googlebook<\/b>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

You can also hand off apps from each other. For example, you could be browsing a page in Chrome on your phone, and then pick up exactly where you left off on your Googlebook. If this sounds familiar, Mac and iPhone users have been enjoying some version of this as part of Apple\u2019s suite of Continuity features.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As for who is a Googlebook for, that\u2019s too early to say. Certainly it\u2019s for Android phone users who are extremely comfortable with and are heavy users of their phones and Google tools. Is there a big enough market? Google surely thinks there is, because they are committing to 10 years of software updates<\/b> for Googlebooks. To be clear, that\u2019s 10 years from now \u2013 not when the laptop is purchased.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Although Google is giving its partners freedom to design their take on a Googlebook, there are some requirements that have to be met. Maletis said that a Googlebook is \u201ca flagship laptop\u201d <\/b>and that it has a \u201cclear standard for hardware craft.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

This means a couple of things. For a start, the chassis has to be made of premium materials<\/b>, which means some combination or form of aluminium, magnesium, or carbon fibre. It must also have a Glow Bar on the lid, which is a small stripe of light that shows the status of the laptop \u2013 things like battery level or charging status.<\/p>\n

Googlebooks must also have a minimum of 16GB of memory and must be powered by high-end processors<\/b>. The first wave of Googlebooks is powered by Intel Core Ultra and Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite processors. Google also said that there will be future models powered by MediaTek chips.<\/p>\n

Apart from these rules, there\u2019s little else for partners to follow, and you can see that in the five models that are launching as part of the first wave. They are:<\/p>\n
