For 15 years, this elderly Toa Payoh resident could not get to the toilet in her unit because it was overflowing with rubbish.<\/p>\n
Now the clutter has been cleared, and she can finally sleep in her own room, Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC MP Cai Yinzhou shared in a TikTok video uploaded to Petir.sg’s page on Monday (Sept 21).<\/p>\n
The resident, known only as Madam J, lives alone in her flat, according to Petir.sg.<\/p>\n
Cai explained that there are 17 rental blocks in Toa Payoh that receive aid from outreach programmes.<\/p>\n
“One of the residents that we met is journeying with us through a season of decluttering of her home,” Cai said.<\/p>\n
When members from the programme first met with the resident, there was just space for about two to three people at her front door.<\/p>\n
Past that, there were “mountains” of clothes and various belongings that the resident would have to crawl over to get to the toilet, Cai said in the video.<\/p>\n
“When my mum passed away, I didn’t touch any of the things,” Madam J told the outreach team.<\/p>\n
“I blocked up my door with my clothes and I never stepped in (to my room) for 15 years.”<\/p>\n
The elderly woman was reluctant to receive help at first, claiming that a lot of other agencies have come and gone \u2014 there was no long-term assistance provided.<\/p>\n
Over Saturday (Sept 19), the outreach team removed most of her belongings with the help of the town council conservancy workers.<\/p>\n
The bedroom has since been cleared out, Cai said, adding: “The stage after that would be to make it a liveable home.”<\/p>\n
Xavier, an outreach team member, shared that the experience left him “very tired”.<\/p>\n
“But it’s very fruitful, because after cleaning out her place, we can see she finally can walk (through her home) properly \u2014 she finally finds that her place is a place for her to stay.”<\/p>\n
Since the cleanup, the outreach team has been in touch with her daily to make sure that she “remains positive”.<\/p>\n
