{"id":8680,"date":"2025-11-04T02:12:52","date_gmt":"2025-11-03T18:12:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=8680"},"modified":"2025-11-04T02:12:52","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T18:12:52","slug":"pap-govt-has-chosen-to-trample-on-lee-kuan-yews-wish-to-have-his-house-demolished-lee-hsien-yang","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=8680","title":{"rendered":"PAP govt has chosen to trample on Lee Kuan Yew\u2019s wish to have his house demolished: Lee Hsien Yang"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE &#8211; <!-- -->The PAP government has chosen to \u201ctrample\u201d on founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew\u2019s wish to have his house demolished in its entirety by planning to gazette the site of 38 Oxley Road as a national monument, said Mr Lee Hsien Yang on Nov 3. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In a statement posted on his Facebook page<!-- --> that night<!-- -->, Mr Lee Hsien Yang said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/govt-intends-to-gazette-site-of-lee-kuan-yews-house-at-38-oxley-road-as-national-monument?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">move to earmark 38 Oxley Road as a national monument<\/p>\n<p><\/a> \u201ceffectively rejects\u201d the demolition application that he had earlier submitted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He noted that the late Mr Lee had regarded his whole house as private. \u201cThe PAP government has chosen to trample on Lee Kuan Yew\u2019s unwavering wish to demolish his private house,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Earlier on Nov 3, the National Heritage Board (NHB) had announced that the Preservation of Sites and Monuments Advisory Board has assessed the 38 Oxley Road site <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/38-oxley-road-site-has-strong-national-significance-and-great-historic-merit-says-advisory-board?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">to be of \u201chistoric significance and national importance\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/a>, and worthy of preservation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth David Neo has accepted the NHB\u2019s recommendation, and intends to gazette the site as a national monument. If a preservation order is made, the Government intends to acquire the site to safeguard and preserve it.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lee Kuan Yew\u2019s Oxley Road home earmarked to be Singapore national monument\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1X13up6u9zw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Lee Hsien Yang, who submitted an application in October 2024 to the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) for permission to demolish the house, was issued a notice of the Government\u2019s intention to preserve the site on Nov 3, 2025. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He said his father was opposed to monuments, and that the People\u2019s Action Party disrespects the legacy and values of Mr Lee Kuan Yew by choosing to gazette 38 Oxley Road as a national monument.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Lee Hsien Yang has two weeks until Nov 17 to submit any objections to the notice, after which Mr Neo will \u201cconsider every objection\u201d before making a final decision on whether to make a preservation order for the site.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew had lived at 38 Oxley Road from the <!-- -->mid-1940s<!-- --> until his death in 2015. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The single-storey bungalow, built in the 19th century, had also served as the early headquarters of the PAP. It was in the basement dining room that the party was founded and where Singapore\u2019s founding leaders had met to plan the transition from the end of colonial rule to independence. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The property has been at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/38-oxley-road-a-timeline-of-events-since-the-lee-family-feud-became-public?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">centre of a family feud<\/p>\n<p><\/a> after the death of Mr Lee Kuan Yew on March 23, 2015.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">His three children had disagreed on the fate of the property when his will was read, with Mr Lee Hsien Yang and his sister, Dr Lee Wei Ling, saying that their father wanted the house demolished without compromise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Their elder brother, then Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, was of the view that their father was prepared to consider alternatives should the Government decide otherwise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In a bid to resolve the disagreement, PM Lee, who was bequeathed the house by Mr Lee Kuan Yew, had transferred the property to Mr Lee Hsien Yang at market value in late 2015.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Dr Lee continued living in the property.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The family feud spilled into public view in June 2017, when Mr Lee Hsien Yang and Dr Lee went on social media to denounce PM Lee and accuse him of trying to block the demolition of the house against the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew\u2019s wish. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Shortly after <!-- -->Dr Lee\u2019s<!-- --> death on Oct 9, 2024, Mr Lee Hsien Yang <!-- -->said<!-- --> in a Facebook post that he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/lee-hsien-yang-will-apply-for-oxley-road-house-to-be-demolished?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">would be applying to demolish the house<\/p>\n<p><\/a> at 38 Oxley Road to build a small private dwelling that would be \u201cbe held within the family in perpetuity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He made an application on Oct 21, 2024 to demolish the house.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">On Oct 24, 2024, NHB announced that it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/nhb-to-study-if-lkys-38-oxley-road-home-is-worthy-of-preservation-says-move-keeps-options-open?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">would carry out a study of the site<\/p>\n<p><\/a> to assess if it is worthy of preservation as a national monument.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The URA then told the media it would defer the evaluation of Mr Lee Hsien Yang\u2019s application given the study.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Since then, Mr Lee Hsien Yang has been calling on Prime Minister Lawrence Wong to make a decision on the property.
