Zach Cregger\u2019s Resident Evil<\/em> movie is finally out, and it\u2019s great. Though it\u2019s been crowned the highest-rated video game adaptation to-date, the Barbarian <\/em>and Weapons <\/em>director made the deliberate choice not to adapt any existing Resident Evil game. Instead, he tried to reconstruct the player experience in movie form, complete with resource management and puzzle solving.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n If you loved Resident Evil<\/em> (2026), with all of its loving nods to the survival horror genre as a whole, you\u2019re probably itching to play another survival horror game yourself. Have no fear (yet), we\u2019ve pulled together the three games you should play to recapture the thrills and scares of Cregger\u2019s Resident Evil. <\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Where to Play<\/strong>: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 3, Windows PC, Xbox 360<\/p>\n If you liked Resident Evil<\/em> (2026), odds are you like horror in general. And if you like horror in general, odds are you love Alien<\/em>, Ridley Scott\u2019s 1979 sci-fi masterpiece. Now imagine it in video game form. Closely designed after the original film, Alien: Isolation<\/em> follows Amanda Ripley, daughter of iconic Alien <\/em>protagonist Ellen Ripley. Investigating the disappearance of her mother, Amanda explores a neglected space station. Surprisingly, an alien is there.<\/p>\n Amanda is functionally helpless against the alien: she can\u2019t see it, and it stalks her relentlessly. Instead, players must rely on stealth and Amanda\u2019s limited ammunition to mount quick escapes. Like Resident Evil <\/em>(2026), Alien: Isolation<\/em> is horrifyingly claustrophobic. Amanda traverses cramped rooms and tight vents, stalked by an unkillable monster. Similarly, Cregger traps Bryan and viewers inside sewers, hospital rooms, and even an RV. In both cases, the threat of another scare behind every door and around every corner is enough to keep both viewers and players on the edge of their seats for hours.<\/p>\n Now is a particularly good time to pick up Alien: Isolation \u2014 its highly anticipated sequel finally got a trailer at Summer Games Fest earlier this year.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Where to Play<\/strong>: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, Xbox One<\/p>\n Unlike previous Resident Evil movies, Resident Evil <\/em>(2026) doesn\u2019t follow an existing series protagonist. Highly trained zombie killers like Leon, Jill, and Chris are nowhere to be found in Cregger\u2019s film. Instead, Cregger introduced audiences to Bryan, a medical courier woefully unprepared for a Resident Evil-style outbreak.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019d rather watch a movie starring a schlub who\u2019s, like, out of shape and has never fired a gun before,\u201d Cregger told Polygon\u2019s Matt Patches.<\/p>\n That\u2019s exactly the movie Cregger made. Byran is not a cop, a soldier, or a special agent. He doesn\u2019t know what he\u2019s doing. That\u2019s part of what makes the film so scary \u2014 Bryan has no special tricks that could turn the table on hordes of infected monsters. He shares that quality with Outlast <\/em>protagonist Miles Upsher. Outlast<\/em>, a first-person survival horror game from Canadian studio Red Barrels, follows Miles as he investigates a derelict psychiatric hospital in Colorado. The hospital is full of \u201cvariants,\u201d violent inmates who freely roam the asylum\u2019s halls.<\/p>\n Viewers who found Bryan\u2019s lack of monster-fighting experience particularly compelling are bound to enjoy Outlast<\/em>. Outlast <\/em>puts Miles in an even worse spot than Bryan: Miles starts unarmed and stays that way for the whole game. When under attack, Miles\u2019 only options are to run or hide.
