{"id":86312,"date":"2026-09-20T01:07:59","date_gmt":"2026-09-19T17:07:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=86312"},"modified":"2026-09-20T01:07:59","modified_gmt":"2026-09-19T17:07:59","slug":"crowds-at-open-air-diners-parks-thin-out-as-air-quality-deteriorates-on-sept-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=86312","title":{"rendered":"Crowds at open-air diners, parks thin out as air quality deteriorates on Sept 19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text-primary article-summary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 <!-- -->It was not a typical Saturday for popular East Coast Lagoon Food Village and parks here when air quality deteriorated on Sept 19.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Crowds thinned out as people stayed home to avoid breathing in transboundary smoke blown inland from regional forest and peatland fires in neighbouring Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">On Sept 19,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/haze-in-singapore-psi-in-central-region-back-in-the-unhealthy-range?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\"> air quality readings in parts of Singapore crossed into the unhealthy region<\/span><\/a> again after a few days of respite, with the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) in the central region exceeding 100 from the afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">As at 5pm, the 24-hr PSI was 80 to 108, in the moderate to unhealthy range, said the National Environment Agency.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">When The Straits Times visited the open-air East Coast Lagoon Food Village at 4pm, there were few people queueing for food and several empty tables, a stark contrast to the bustling crowds seen on a typical weekend.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ragamatthulla<!-- -->, 48, better known as Rahman, who runs Adigun Curry Claypot said: \u201cBy now, the dinner crowd would have started building up. But there are a lot of empty seats today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He added: \u201cWith this kind of weather, who wants to come out? This is especially for people with kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Roy Tan, 38, who works at the hawker centre\u2019s drink stall, also observed the drop in footfall on <!-- -->Sept 18 and Sept 19<!-- -->. \u201cI hope the weather will improve and business will pick up soon,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Some East Coast Park goers were seen wearing masks. We will take more precautions once we can smell the haze,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">At Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, a daily morning qigong session for residents aged 50 and above has been suspended for the past week due to the haze. NEA\u2019s advisory on Sept 19 said that dry conditions continued and are expected to persist over Kalimantan and southern Sumatra.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cSmoke plumes from fires in these areas were observed drifting towards Singapore,\u201d the agency said in a statement at 6pm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThere is a risk of smoke haze affecting Singapore as the prevailing winds are expected to blow from the east-southeast or south-east. The 24-hour PSI for Singapore is forecast to be in the high-moderate to mid-unhealthy range.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Resorts World Sentosa, which operates attractions such as Universal Studios Singapore, Adventure Cove Waterpark and Singapore Oceanarium, said that its venues remain open.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It has enhanced monitoring across the resort and stepped up efforts to maintain indoor air quality. Masks will be available to guests who request them, and those unwell will be attended to by medical personnel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Sentosa Development Corp (SDC) said that during the haze season, it closely monitors PSI forecasts, health advisories and official guidance.
