A woman was stopped from potentially sharing her personal details with a scammer after a fellow commuter intervened during a suspicious phone call on the MRT.<\/p>\n
In an Instagram post on Thursday (Sept 17), user vitrealestate, who identifies herself as Vit Olivia Ng on her account, recounted how she overheard the woman receiving a suspicious call while they were travelling on an MRT train.<\/p>\n
According to Ng, the call was conducted on speaker mode, allowing nearby passengers to hear the caller shouting and speaking aggressively.<\/p>\n
The woman appeared visibly nervous and was seen showing her passport to the caller during a video call. The caller then allegedly instructed her to show her bank card as well.<\/p>\n
Concerned that the woman was about to reveal sensitive personal and banking information, Ng decided to step in.<\/p>\n
“I think it’s a scam,” she told the woman, who promptly ended the call.<\/p>\n
Ng typed an explanation on her phone to help the woman understand the situation and advised her not to share her banking or personal details with anyone over the phone.<\/p>\n
Based on the call history shown on the woman’s phone, the caller appeared to be impersonating a police officer and had contacted her through an unknown email address.<\/p>\n
After the call ended, Ng and the woman exchanged contact details, with the latter thanking her for stepping in.<\/p>\n
Ng said the woman was from the Philippines and had moved to Singapore just three weeks earlier in search of employment.<\/p>\n
“She didn’t expect to encounter scams like this here, and genuinely thought she had done something wrong when the ‘police’ called her,” Ng wrote.<\/p>\n
Ng said approaching a stranger on the train felt “a little awkward”, but decided that it was important to offer help when someone appeared to be in trouble.<\/p>\n
“You never know when a small act of courage can make a difference.”<\/p>\n
