A Mercedes driver who was allegedly intoxicated struck two pedestrians walking along Raffles Avenue in the Marina Bay area on Wednesday (Sept 16) night.<\/p>\n
The accident occurred near Esplanade Mall at about 10pm, reported Shin Min Daily News.<\/p>\n
An eyewitness, surnamed Zhao, said a woman was knocked onto the ground and could not get back on her feet. Another man said he was suffering from chest pain and dizziness.<\/p>\n
The injured are tourists from China, according to the report.<\/p>\n
The car had also crashed into a bollard set up for the upcoming Formula One night race<\/a> taking place at the Marina Bay Street Circuit from Oct 8 to 10.<\/p>\n The police told AsiaOne that the 40-year-old woman and 41-year-old man were conscious when taken to the hospital.<\/p>\n When a Shin Min reporter reached the scene shortly after the accident, the male Mercedes driver, who was in a white button-up shirt, was being interviewed by police officers.<\/p>\n Zhao, the eyewitness, claimed the driver exited his car after the accident but did not check on the hurt pedestrians. Instead, he ran to a nearby grassy area.<\/p>\n A group of people who were with the injured pedestrians confronted the driver.<\/p>\n Zhao recounted to Shin Min: “They told me that the male driver still smelled of alcohol and was playing it cool. When the police arrived, he tried to shake hands with them, but they ignored him.”<\/p>\n The injured male pedestrian, surnamed Zhou, said he is a colleague of the injured female pedestrian.<\/p>\n “My female colleague’s injuries are more serious.
