SINGAPORE \u2013 Tower Transit is looking for the four commuters who rushed to help a bus driver on Sept 14, after he became unresponsive behind the wheel while approaching a bus stop in Hougang.<\/p>\n
In a Facebook post on Sept 15, the bus operator highlighted the \u201ccaring commuter culture\u201d shown in the incident and said \u201cwe\u2019d love the chance to thank you properly\u201d.<\/p>\n
It also expressed its appreciation to an SBS Transit bus driver who had quickly alerted the Tower Transit control centre to the medical emergency.<\/p>\n
Tower Transit said that a man at a bus stop had noticed a bus driver on service 854 slumped in the cabin on the afternoon of Sept 14 and banged on the doors to sound the alert.<\/p>\n
Passengers on board the double-decker bus also rushed to help, it added.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne checked on our captain, another called for an ambulance and a third climbed into the driver\u2019s seat to engage the handbrake and bring the bus safely to a stop,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n
The woman who pulled the handbrake to stop the bus also explained the situation to the Tower Transit control centre, it added.<\/p>\n
The Singapore Civil Defence Force said that it received a call for assistance in Hougang Avenue 3 at about 1.30pm on Sept 14. A person was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, it added.<\/p>\n
Tower Transit said the bus captain is in hospital in a stable condition and all passengers who were on board the bus were safe.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are in touch with his loved ones and checking in on him regularly,\u201d a spokesperson said, in response to queries.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur only concern is that he has a full and speedy recovery, and the best thing for him right now is to rest and let the doctors care for him.\u201d<\/p>\n
The spokesperson added that staff will be visiting the bus driver on Sept 16, together with members of the National Transport Workers\u2019 Union.<\/p>\n
Tower Transit said in its post: \u201cTo the vigilant commuter at the bus stop, the quick-thinking passengers, and the helpful SBS Transit Ltd bus captain, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. If this was you, please DM us or call our hotline.\u201d<\/p>\n
SBS Transit, in a Facebook post on Sept 16, said the driver has since been identified as Toh Tiong Huat, who was driving service 55.<\/p>\n
\u201cSensing that something was amiss, he safely parked his bus and went over to check on the situation,\u201d the post said.<\/p>\n
After calling for support and ensuring that help was on the way, Toh returned to his bus and continued on his journey, it added.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will be recognising him for stepping up to help a fellow Bus Captain when it mattered. His actions are a heartening reminder that while we may wear different uniforms, we are all part of the same #OneTransportFamily,\u201d the transport operator added.<\/p>\n
Several Facebook users said they were heartened by the actions of the commuters and Toh, with some also wishing the Tower Transit driver a speedy recovery.<\/p>\n
Said Jimmy Lian Nanshun: \u201cThe beauty of public transport lies in the teamwork between commuters, transport workers and different PTOs (public transport operators). Though they may wear different uniforms, I believe all share one purpose, keeping Singapore moving safely and smoothly.\u201d<\/p>\n
User Mohd Elias hailed \u201cThe Hougang Spirit\u201d, while another user, Oh Leng Kiong, added: \u201cSituations like this show how important it is to look out for one another. Hope the bus captain is recovering well.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a Facebook post on Sept 16, Baey Yam Keng, who is Minister of State for Transport, as well as Culture, Community and Youth, said: \u201cHeartwarming to see Caring Commuters in action… Every small act of care can make a difference.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
