{"id":8548,"date":"2025-11-03T13:55:50","date_gmt":"2025-11-03T05:55:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=8548"},"modified":"2025-11-03T13:55:50","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T05:55:50","slug":"wp-chief-pritam-singh-to-appeal-against-conviction-sentence-on-nov-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=8548","title":{"rendered":"WP chief Pritam Singh to appeal against conviction, sentence on Nov 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE &#8211;<!-- --> On Nov 4, Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh is set to appeal against the conviction and sentence meted out to him in February for lying to a parliamentary committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Workers\u2019 Party (WP) chief was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/courts-crime\/wp-chief-pritam-singh-fined-7000-for-each-of-two-charges-after-conviction-for-lying-to-committee?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\"> fined a total of $14,000<\/p>\n<p><\/a> on Feb 17, when he was found guilty of giving false testimonies to the Committee of Privileges (COP), which was looking into a lie told by then WP MP Raeesah Khan. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He pleaded not guilty during the 13-day trial and announced to reporters outside the State Courts his intention to appeal against the decision after he received the maximum fine of $7,000 for each charge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Singh was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/wp-chief-pritam-singh-under-police-probe-over-ex-mp-raeesah-khan-s-lying-case-arrives-at-court?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">charged under the Parliament (Privileges, Immunities and Powers) Act<\/p>\n<p><\/a> in March 2024, more than two years after the COP\u2019s report said he had not been truthful in his testimony while under oath.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The committee had been looking into Ms Khan, who in August 2021 lied about accompanying a sexual assault victim to a police station, and in October repeated the false claim before the House. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">She eventually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/wp-mp-raeesah-khan-referred-to-parliament-privileges-committee-for-lying-about?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">apologised to Parliament<\/p>\n<p><\/a> on Nov 1, 2021, confessing that her rape victim anecdote was false. Mr Singh was among the WP leaders called in by the committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Singh is the first sitting opposition MP to be convicted of a criminal charge in almost 40 years. His appeal on Nov 4 will be heard by Justice Steven Chong at the Supreme Court.<!-- --> <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In his judgment in February, Deputy Principal District Judge Luke Tan ruled that Mr Singh wilfully lied to the COP about how he dealt with the untruth, with evidence showing that Mr Singh \u201cnever wanted Ms Khan to clarify (her) lie\u201d and had \u201cdirect and intimate involvement\u201d in nudging Ms Khan to continue to lie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">There were several key flashpoints during the high-profile trial, with charged cross-examinations and pithy catchphrases, which drew much public interest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Singh and Ms Khan took the witness stand, along with former WP cadres, Ms Khan\u2019s former assistants Loh Pei Ying and Yudhishthra Nathan, and former party chief Low Thia Khiang.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Singh\u2019s lawyers \u2013 Mr Andre Jumabhoy and Mr Aristotle Eng \u2013 sought to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/courts-crime\/you-tell-lies-non-stop-pritam-singh-s-lawyer-paints-former-wp-mp-raeesah-khan-as-habitual-liar?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">paint Ms Khan as a habitual liar<\/p>\n<p><\/a> during her cross-examination on Oct 15. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The prosecution, including then Deputy Attorney-General Ang Cheng Hock, argued that Mr Singh <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/courts-crime\/your-evidence-is-incredible-says-prosecution-to-singh-key-points-on-day-12-of-wp-chiefs-trial?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">tried to cover up his involvement in Ms Khan\u2019s lie to Parliament<\/p>\n<p><\/a>. Mr Ang was appointed a judge of the High Court in May and a justice of the Court of Appeal in October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The prosecution sought the maximum fine of $7,000 for Mr Singh on each charge, while the defence asked for $4,000 per charge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In the judgment on Feb 17, which lasted more than two hours, Judge Tan said he agreed with the prosecution that the court must \u201csend a message on the importance of giving truthful information when under oath\u201d and that imposing the maximum fine was necessary, particularly since Mr Singh \u201cnever recanted the lie\u201d even after claiming trial. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Questions swirled around Mr Singh\u2019s political future after the trial concluded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Asked by reporters after the verdict whether his conviction might force him to consider stepping down, Mr Singh replied: \u201cWell, I think the need of the hour is for me to step up, not step down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The authorities also confirmed then that the sentence imposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/eld-confirms-sentence-imposed-on-pritam-singh-does-not-reach-threshold-to-disqualify-him-as-an-mp?ref=inline-article&amp;ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">did not reach the threshold to disqualify him<\/p>\n<p><\/a> as an MP or from standing in the election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">At the general election in May, Mr Singh successfully <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/ge2025-wp-retains-strongholds-in-aljunied-and-hougang-despite-national-swing-to-pap?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">retained his parliamentary seat<\/p>\n<p><\/a> in Aljunied GRC.
