data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013<!-- --> The air quality in Singapore continued to improve on the morning of Sept 16, with the 24-hour PSI in all five regions of the island resting in the moderate range.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The central region\u2019s air quality improved to 99 at 11am after spending all morning in the unhealthy range.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The central region\u00a0includes the Thomson, Marymount, Sin Ming, Ang Mo Kio, Bishan, Serangoon Gardens, MacRitchie and Toa Payoh areas, according to the National Environment Agency\u2019s (NEA) website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) readings across the rest of the island have been within the moderate range since midnight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The PSI stood at 83 for the east, 85 for the west, 76 for the\u00a0north and 74 for the south at 11am on Sept 16.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This is in stark contrast to the day before, when\u00a0unhealthy levels of pollutants were recorded all across the country, a first since September 2019.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"responsive-iframe-base st_visuals st_visuals-embed\" title=\"st_visuals embed\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/multimedia\/graphics\/2026\/08\/singapore-haze-widget\/index.html\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"accelerometer;falseclipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\" loading=\"eager\" data-testid=\"responsiveIframe\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Air quality is considered unhealthy when the 24-hour PSI is in the range of\u00a0101 to 200,\u00a0during which\u00a0the NEA advises the public to\u00a0reduce outdoor activities.\u00a0PSI readings\u00a0of 51 to 100 are considered moderate, while\u00a0values of\u00a0zero to 50 are in the \u201cgood\u201d\u00a0range.<\/p>\n<p>The conditions on Sept 15 prompted some organisations such as the Football Association of Singapore to implement measures to mitigate the impact of the haze.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In an advisory on Sept 15, NEA said air quality in Singapore for the next 24 hours was forecast to be in the high moderate to mid-unhealthy range.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Dry conditions are expected over central and southern Sumatra and southern Kalimantan in neighbouring Indonesia \u2013 where forest fires have raged for weeks \u2013 in the coming days, NEA added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWith the prevailing winds forecast to continue blowing from the south-east to east-south-east, there is a risk of smoke haze affecting Singapore,\u201d the agency said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The PSI crossed into the unhealthy range\u00a0two weeks ago,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/haze-in-singapore-psi-crosses-101-in-central-region-as-air-quality-enters-unhealthy-range?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">hitting\u00a0101\u00a0in central Singapore<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on the morning of\u00a0Sept 4.\u00a0In the days that followed, readings in the\u00a0central, eastern and western\u00a0parts of Singapore occasionally crossed into the unhealthy range.<\/p>\n<p>September\u2019s developments mark the first time since\u00a0October 2023 that\u00a0the PSI in Singapore hit unhealthy levels because of haze, with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/increased-risk-of-haze-in-singapore-from-june-to-october-due-to-el-nino-indian-ocean-dipole?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">the authorities earlier warning of the risk of haze<\/span><\/a>\u00a0between June and October\u00a0as a result of\u00a0warmer and drier conditions brought on
