This has come out of left field, but Sega <\/b>has announced that it is partnering with Netflix <\/b>to produce, not one, but three film adaptations of Sega\u2019s franchises: Crazy Taxi<\/b>, Sonic <\/b>and Stranger than Heaven<\/b>.<\/p>\n
The Crazy Taxi film adaptation headlines in the announcement, no doubt due to the upcoming release of Crazy Taxi: World Tour, slated to come out in 2027. Sega stated that the Crazy Taxi adaptation will be a live-action comedy, and is set to be written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, who were co-writers for 2025\u2019s The Naked Gun.<\/p>\n The announcement of a Crazy Taxi movie comes as part of a renaissance for the franchise, with Crazy Taxi: World Tour slated for a 2027 release.<\/p>\n Image: Sega<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher and Toru Nakahara are set to produce the Crazy Taxi movie. If those names sound familiar, that\u2019s because they\u2019re the producers for the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog film series.<\/p>\n Speaking of which, the Sonic adaptation is set to be a kids\u2019 animation series. Netflix and Sega had a successful partnership when it comes to Sonic Prime, a 3D animated Sonic show that ran for three seasons and concluded in 2024, so it\u2019s no surprise that both companies are gunning for another Sonic series.<\/p>\n This time, the target audience is for upper pre-schoolers, and the official blurb describes the upcoming show as \u201ca high-voltage, comedic, yet emotionally grounded series built for kids who want to feel a little edge, a little attitude, and a lot of \u201cthat\u2019s my crew\u201d wish fulfillment.\u201d<\/p>\n The new Sonic animated adaptation is aimed at pre-schoolers, and comes on the heels of Netflix\u2019s Sonic Prime, a successful three-season series.<\/p>\n Screenshot: Netflix Family YouTube channel<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n The last of these announcements is perhaps the most perplexing one, not least because Stranger than Heaven isn\u2019t even released yet. In case you missed it, Stranger than Heaven is an upcoming prequel for the entire Like a Dragon franchise, set in Japan across a time period of 50 years in the 20th century. The game is slated for release on 15 January 2027.<\/p>\n Given that Yakuza has a large devout fanbase, it\u2019s understandable (and indeed overdue) that Sega would try to give the franchise another shot at a feature length adaptation. And yes, I meant \u2018another\u2019 shot; the last attempt at a Yazkua film was 2007\u2019s Like a Dragon, about 20 years ago.<\/p>\n And true to the mood of the franchise, Sega and Netflix have billed the Stranger than Heaven adaptation as a \u201clive-action crime\u201d flick.<\/p>\n Unfortunately, Sega has not announced when these adaptations will arrive. But these announcements have confirmed that they\u2019re in development, and are now amongst the long list of video game adaptations that Netflix is working on across multiple game franchises.
