{"id":85180,"date":"2026-09-15T19:47:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-15T11:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=85180"},"modified":"2026-09-15T19:47:00","modified_gmt":"2026-09-15T11:47:00","slug":"why-singapores-central-region-has-the-worst-air-quality-during-haze","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=85180","title":{"rendered":"Why Singapore\u2019s central region has the worst air quality during haze"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text-primary article-summary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE &#8211;<!-- --> <!-- -->Singapore has been experiencing hazy conditions for over a week since air quality in the central region<a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/haze-in-singapore-psi-crosses-101-in-central-region-as-air-quality-enters-unhealthy-range?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\"> first dipped to unhealthy levels<\/span><\/a> on Sept 4.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Since then, the central region has consistently registered the highest Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) and PM2.5 readings in the five regions used for air quality monitoring \u2013 north, south, east, west and central.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The PSI is a measure of air quality in Singapore, and readings of over 100 reflect unhealthy air quality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Under such conditions, healthy people should reduce prolonged or strenuous outdoor activities, while those with chronic heart and lung disease should avoid such activities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">PM2.5 readings refer to concentrations of fine particulate matter that is the dominant pollutant during periods of transboundary haze.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">For instance, the PSI in central Singapore<a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/air-quality-in-all-5-regions-of-singapore-in-the-unhealthy-range?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\"> reached a high of 154 at daybreak on Sept 1<\/span><\/a>5. Other regions registered readings of between 104 and 128 at that time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">At 5pm on the same day, the PSI in the central region dropped slightly to 133. The west and east regions also recorded unhealthy air, with the values between 114 and 116, while the PSI in the north and south dipped to moderate levels at 92 and 94 respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The central region<!-- --> includes the Thomson, Marymount, Sin Ming, Ang Mo Kio, Bishan, Serangoon Gardens, MacRitchie and Toa Payoh areas, according to the National Environment Agency (NEA) website.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"responsive-iframe-base st_visuals st_visuals-embed\" title=\"st_visuals embed\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/multimedia\/graphics\/2026\/08\/singapore-haze-widget\/index.html\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"accelerometer;falseclipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\" loading=\"eager\" data-testid=\"responsiveIframe\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Koh Tieh Yong, an adjunct associate professor in meteorology and climate science at the National University of Singapore, told The Straits Times that this is because the area is highly urbanised and surrounded by more buildings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Urban<!-- --> heat from concrete structures heats up the air above the ground, causing hot, rising air parcels that enhance air turbulence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">As winds carry the PM2.5 particles from the forest fires in Indonesia to Singapore, the pollutants are caught more efficiently by the turbulent air in the central region, causing them to concentrate over the area and close to the ground, he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">If thicker haze blows over Singapore, the whole island would reach unhealthy air quality or worse, added Koh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This was seen on the morning of Sept 15, when all parts of Singapore registered<!-- --> <!-- -->unhealthy air \u2013 the first time this has occurred since 2019.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"landscape inline-media-wrapper\" data-testid=\"inline-media-test-id\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-col items-start relative w-fit\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 480px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/1f1760d47628a46cad8f232f0070e7facc11fb7d6190e6949f12d14412e38173?w=480\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 720px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/1f1760d47628a46cad8f232f0070e7facc11fb7d6190e6949f12d14412e38173?w=720\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 721px and max-width: 3999px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/1f1760d47628a46cad8f232f0070e7facc11fb7d6190e6949f12d14412e38173?w=900\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 4000px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/1f1760d47628a46cad8f232f0070e7facc11fb7d6190e6949f12d14412e38173\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/1f1760d47628a46cad8f232f0070e7facc11fb7d6190e6949f12d14412e38173\" alt=\"Hazy conditions seen from Tanjong Pagar Distripark towards Bukit Purmei and Mount Faber at 3.02pm on Sept 15.\" class=\"aspect-landscape flex items-start shrink-0 object-cover landscape article-landscape mobile:w-auto tablet:w-auto\" data-testid=\"image-test-id\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/picture><\/div><figcaption class=\"mobile:mx-16 tablet:mx-00 pt-08 pb-16\">\n<p class=\"inline text-secondary font-secondary-captions-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"inline-media-caption-test-id\">Hazy conditions seen from Tanjong Pagar Distripark towards Bukit Purmei and Mount Faber at 3.02pm on Sept 15.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline text-tertiary font-secondary-captions-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"inline-media-credit-test-id\"> <!-- -->ST PHOTO: JASEL POH<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Steve Yim, professor and director of the Centre for Climate Change and Environmental Health at Nanyang Technological University, said the higher PSI in the central region could be due to the dry conditions in Singapore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Under such dry conditions, the particles can be from both haze and local emissions or pollutants in the downtown area,<!-- --> <!-- -->he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Separately, the NEA said in a Facebook post on Sept 15 that while Singapore has referenced the US Environmental Protection Agency\u2019s <!-- -->Air Quality Index (AQI)<!-- --> system in computing its PSI, they are not identical.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It added: \u201cThere are no international guidelines on the computation of air quality index. Each country adopts a different index system based on local needs and circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cAir quality readings or indices provided by other websites adopt other methods of computing the index and are not comparable with the 24-hr PSI,\u201d the agency said. \u201cThey may also rely on a combination of low-cost, less robust sensors and published data to make their calculations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">For instance, local website IQAir uses data from NEA and seven private contributors to churn out the air quality index and PM2.5 value in Singapore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">NEA\u2019s post comes as some social media users have been comparing Singapore\u2019s PSI readings with the AQI found on other websites<!-- --> <!-- -->such as <a href=\"https:\/\/aqicn.org\/city\/singapore\/central\/?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">aqicn.org<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The <!-- -->AQI<!-- --> readings often reflect poorer air quality in Singapore<!-- --> <!-- -->than the 24-hour PSI, which is Singapore\u2019s official national reporting system for air quality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The PSI is calculated based on six different pollutants \u2013 small particulate matter PM10 and PM2.5, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone and carbon monoxide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The NEA said Singapore\u2019s air quality data is measured by pollutant analysers, which continuously measure the level of the six pollutant types.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThese analysers, placed across the five regions of Singapore, are highly specialised equipment, based on internationally recognised methods,\u201d NEA said. \u201cThis is to ensure measurements are reliable and scientifically robust.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"portrait inline-media-wrapper\" style=\"--aspect-article-portrait:1080 \/ 1350\" data-testid=\"inline-media-test-id\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-col items-start relative w-fit\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 480px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/131c227bcbd6097fe818b224ffff2ca9b78cc628b863dd90bb56df2fb5835b55?w=480\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 720px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/131c227bcbd6097fe818b224ffff2ca9b78cc628b863dd90bb56df2fb5835b55?w=720\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 721px and max-width: 3999px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/131c227bcbd6097fe818b224ffff2ca9b78cc628b863dd90bb56df2fb5835b55?w=900\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 4000px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/131c227bcbd6097fe818b224ffff2ca9b78cc628b863dd90bb56df2fb5835b55\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/131c227bcbd6097fe818b224ffff2ca9b78cc628b863dd90bb56df2fb5835b55\" alt=\"Information chart on how to plan outdoor activities during haze.\" class=\"aspect-portrait flex items-start shrink-0 portrait article-portrait object-contain mobile:w-auto tablet:w-auto\" data-testid=\"image-test-id\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/picture><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<center><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/environment\/why-is-singapores-central-region-registering-the-worst-air-quality-during-this-years-haze\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read Full Article At Source <\/a><br \/>\n<center\/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SINGAPORE &#8211;
