{"id":84905,"date":"2026-09-14T19:46:59","date_gmt":"2026-09-14T11:46:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=84905"},"modified":"2026-09-14T19:46:59","modified_gmt":"2026-09-14T11:46:59","slug":"man-who-drove-around-spore-with-blaster-device-to-transmit-over-10-5k-phishing-messages-gets-jail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=84905","title":{"rendered":"Man who drove around S\u2019pore with \u2018blaster device\u2019 to transmit over 10.5k phishing messages gets jail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text-primary article-summary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 <!-- --> A Malaysian man who was  promised RM1,000 (S$311) a day drove around Singapore with a \u201cblaster device\u201d, transmitting over 10,500 phishing messages to different WhatsApp accounts in October and November 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">More than 31,000 mobile phones had fallen within the coverage area of the device, and one person suffered a loss of over $1,800 after transferring cash to a third party\u2019s bank account.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">On Sept 14, Ong Kak Seng, 28, was sentenced to a year and nine months\u2019 jail, and a fine of $1,500.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He had pleaded guilty to a cheating charge, and will have to spend an additional week behind bars if he fails to pay the fine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He committed the offence after owing around RM80,000 to unlicensed moneylenders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Court documents stated that Ong was in Malaysia around 2023,<!-- --> <!-- -->and got to know a man known only as \u201cBai Ge\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In October 2025, Bai Ge found out Ong was in debt, and offered him a job to earn RM1,000 a day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ong had to drive around densely populated areas in either Hong Kong or Singapore for up to 12 hours daily, with the blaster device in his car.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ong knew this was illegal, the court heard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This was because a driver in Malaysia would ordinarily be paid about RM3,000 a month for performing legitimate services, and Bai Ge was offering a salary of almost 10 times the amount.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ong told Bai Ge he wanted to work in Singapore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">At Bai Ge\u2019s home in Malaysia later that month, Ong was taught to assemble and set up the blaster device.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">On Oct 12, 2025, Ong assembled different components to make the device, which he placed in his car.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He later got hold of mobile phones, which he used with the device.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ong operated one mobile phone as a \u201cprimary device\u201d. Through an application, he could pair this primary device with the blaster device, enabling him to turn the device on and off remotely with this mobile phone. <\/p>\n<p>He used another mobile phone as a \u201csecondary device\u201d, and turned the \u201cmobile hot spot\u201d function of this phone on. <\/p>\n<p>With the \u201cmobile hot spot\u201d function turned on for this phone, the accused would pair the \u201csecondary device\u201d with the \u201cprimary device\u201d, and enable the \u201cprimary device\u201d to gain Internet network access.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Between Oct 13 and Nov 18, 2025, he drove around numerous locations in Singapore for between 10 and 12 hours every day with the device, antennae and various battery packs at the back of his car.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He also met up with one Lie Dao Jing, 27, a Singaporean who was allegedly performing the same task as him.
