Christophe Leribault, president of the Louvre Museum<\/span>, is encouraging Asian art lovers to help fund a more than \u20ac1 billion (US$1.2 billion) architectural overhaul aimed at easing overcrowding and transforming the visitor experience at the Paris<\/span> landmark.<\/div>\n

Leribault arrived in Hong Kong on September 9, fresh from opening a Renaissance exhibition in Tokyo that featured Leonardo da Vinci\u2019s rarely loaned La Belle Ferronniere<\/em> (circa 1490).<\/p>\n

Speaking at the French consulate in Hong Kong, he outlined his strategy for leading the world\u2019s most visited museum out of a crisis. Leribault took office in February 2026, after his predecessor, Laurence des Cars, resigned<\/span> under intense pressure following a catastrophic heist in which thieves stole French crown jewels<\/span> valued at around US$100 million from the institution in 2025.<\/div>\n
To help offset rising security, urgent repair and infrastructure costs, international tourists are already shouldering a heavier burden. In January, the Louvre introduced a controversial dual-pricing system<\/span>, hiking admission fees for non-European Union visitors by 45 per cent, from \u20ac22 to \u20ac32.<\/div>\n
However, ticketing income and state funding will only cover 75 per cent of the monumental Louvre Nouvelle Renaissance project, Leribault said. The project was put into place by des Cars and officially launched by French President Emmanuel Macron<\/span> in 2025, to raise the museum\u2019s annual capacity from 9 million to 12 million.<\/div>\n

A \u20ac360 million funding shortfall remains even after a \u20ac300 million contribution from the licensing fee earned from the Louvre Abu Dhabi<\/span>. Noting that 16 per cent of the Louvre\u2019s visitors come from Asia \u2013 Chinese tourists made up the largest group \u2013 Leribault hopes regional philanthropists will step forward.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
