Few would guess that Hong Kong\u2019s first plant-based canned coffee brand, Busy Brew, is run by a 23-year-old.<\/p>\n

One might be tempted to see it as a Gen Z entrepreneur fairy tale: a student spots a gap in the market, builds a cult following for her canned oat milk<\/span> lattes, lands incubation funding and watches the product fly off shelves in some of the city\u2019s largest retail chains.<\/div>\n

But founder Nikita Kuwadekar, born and raised in Hong Kong, will be the first to tell you that the journey has not been easy. Behind the curated Instagram posts and the accolades lies a story of open-heart surgery, rejections, relentless hustle and trading the security of a nine-to-five job for the chaos that comes with building a brand from scratch.<\/p>\n

Kuwadekar was born with a congenital condition and needed open\u2011heart surgery while still in high school. Determined not to fall behind, she overhauled her diet, cutting dairy and sugar to accelerate her recovery. The physical benefits were immediate: her skin cleared and her energy returned.<\/p>\n

She also made a discovery that would eventually shape her career. \u201cI realised I was lactose intolerant<\/span>, and that like 90 per cent of Asians, and almost 68 per cent of the world, are too,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s nuts. Because everything around us is dairy: bubble tea, coffees, every canned coffee on the shelf.\u201d<\/div>\n
