The production promises a theatrical experience that is at once intimate and expansive. Drawing on the literati ideals of music, go, calligraphy, painting, poetry, fragrance, flowers, and tea, Voyage traces a path from urban bustle towards serene equilibrium, inviting audiences to slow down and feel the textures of a balanced life in harmony with nature. This first collaboration between the two companies arrives as a timely meditation on cultural continuity, sustainability, and the small rituals that anchor us.

Huang Lei, Concept and Choreographer of the production from HKDance, translates the eight graces into a living lexicon of poetic movements. The heroine, Ah Ya, moves through joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness, each emotion refracted through a different grace. Solo passages become intimate reflections; group sequences unfold like communal rituals. “The wisdom of the old days can still speak to our lives now. When we talk about composing poetry, writing calligraphy, and painting, these practices all cultivate the spirit and soothe the heart, not unlike posts in social media these days,” Huang says.

A collaborative piece, “Voyage of the Eight Graces” features live music by Singapore’s The TENG Ensemble.

“I want to explore more deeply the meaning of the eight graces in contemporary life. These refined arts carry universal values and ancient philosophical ideas, and people today can still find strong emotional responses and resonances with their everyday experiences,” Huang says. Certain smells or sensations can trigger childhood memories or feelings, he adds. “We reinterpret the eight graces through a contemporary visual lens, using the dancers’ bodies, the theatre space, and the flow of time to transform these cultural images so that the audience can experience a reawakening of traditional culture and feel its connection to our present lives.”

Lighting and spatial design respond to the U-shaped seating in the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts’ HKJC Amphitheatre, giving the stage a three-dimensional quality that immerses the audience—many cine-literate—in vivid storytelling. In a subtle nod to our relationship with nature, many costumes and set pieces are crafted from recycled materials, reinforcing the production’s green theatre ethos. “Perhaps being eco-friendly is a kind of simplification,” Huang says. “This show reflects the idea that life should be simple and minimalist.”

Movements and music enter into active dialogue. Because the music has swing and jazz elements, it made me think of scent,” Huang explains.

Dr. Samuel Wong, Concept and Creative Director (Music) of the production from The TENG Company, describes compiling the score as an act of “cultural sustainability”, citing the use of qupai, a traditional compositional method in which a root melody is adapted into many new works, which themselves evolve into hybrid forms that honour tradition while embracing contemporary idioms. Through this infusion of cultural sustainability and diversity, Wong says, audiences can expect traditional music blended with rock, hip hop, and grunge, among other genres.

The music’s fusion of timbres deepens the production’s conversation about balance and harmony with nature. The improvisatory jamming between musicians and choreographers has pushed both disciplines into new territory, Wong believes. The melodies support the dancers’ emotional arc and speak directly to contemporary audiences. “The music is one entry point that allows contemporary society and tradition to be side by side with each other. [Embodied in the pieces] are traditional Chinese philosophical ideas and values that we want to embrace in our present society,” Wong says. “Especially in the current global state of affairs, we need harmony more than ever.”

This multidisciplinary production also benefits from Melissa Leung’s dramaturgy and performance coaching, which shape poetic fragments into a coherent emotional arc. “My approach emphasises the interior life and personal experiences of the performers: sometimes the most powerful moment is not a step but a small, recognisable everyday action, like picking up a diary,” says Leung. This solid internal world enables the performers to project energy on stage. “It’s about the dancers’ interpretation of the character. Sometimes it’s not dancing, but just being… The dancers will also speak and ask simple questions on stage.”

Leung sometimes uses what she calls a “naughty” technique—asking dancers to imagine someone they are scolding—to draw out anger. “It’s like a springboard to bring out the muscle tension and the emotion on stage,” she adds.

Completing the storytelling are projected texts and videos, the ephemeral flutter of costumes, and the careful use of props. “We want a holistic experience,” Leung says. “In the theatre, the audience will breathe together with the performers, and feel the music, energy, and even the silent moment. Hopefully as they leave, they will reflect on the journey.”

What makes Voyage of the Eight Graces compelling is the way dance, cross-cultural music, and theatre converse seamlessly, so the work can resonate with a broad audience. The TENG Ensemble’s sonic textures nudge the dancers into new shapes; HKDance’s distilled movement vocabulary gives the music visual form; and performance coaching ensures those forms carry emotional truth.

Dance, cross-cultural music, and theatre converse seamlessly in “Voyage of the Eight Graces” so that it resonates with a broad audience.

“The traditional Chinese have already embedded sustainability into their lives and culture,” Wong says.
