Hong Kong artist Lau Wai<\/span> has spent the past two months turning the De Sarthe gallery in Wong Chuk Hang into an open studio, building a new body of work that asks a question many are only beginning to grapple with: as artificial intelligence advances, what will be the ultimate role of humans?<\/div>\n

The answer, in the 42-year-old\u2019s new solo exhibition \u201cAfter Intelligence\u201d, is not a comforting one.<\/p>\n

The exhibition, which runs until September 25, unfolds like a closed loop: humans undergo AI training while AI learns to mimic humans, blurring the line between what is human and what is artificial in this digital age.<\/p>\n

At the centre of the narrative is WAI, a digital avatar of Lau that first appeared in his The Cast of the Invisible (2024)<\/em>, which won the Award of Distinction at the Prix Ars Electronica 2025.<\/p>\n

At De Sarthe, the character \u2013 made from motion and facial capture technologies \u2013 starts a new journey in The Morphing<\/em> (2026), a seven-minute CGI video that takes place in an office full of employees with identical desks and no faces.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
